College Prowler Take

Nearly all students move off campus after their sophomore year into one of the options surrounding campus. UD students have nearly taken over all of the neighborhoods around campus, much to the dismay of the few remaining elderly residents who maliciously call the cops for any late-night noise. Options range from apartment complexes to houses, old and new. Some houses are extremely run-down, and students planning on partying hard usually look for these houses on purpose. Other students generally find something at least nicer than the dorms.

While most students find off-campus housing a more enjoyable experience than the dorms, you have to be careful about where you live. Certain areas are more dangerous than others, and some are considered party central. All the best places go first, so it’s important to start looking early. Some students have had major issues with bad landlords who refuse to fix broken pipes and air conditioners and try to take advantage of them. There are also some very strict rules in the Newark standard lease that are worth paying careful attention to before signing.

Another great place to live off campus is the apartments at Iron Ridge. It's about a 5-minute drive from campus and has cheaper and larger living space than on campus. It also comes with extras like a pool and tennis courts. It's also great for grad students!

The only really difficult part is cooking your own food and paying utilities every month. It’s more responsibility, but the freedom is worth it. People are often eager to move off campus, so they can throw parties for their friends instead of always searching for one to go to.

I live off campus in Towne Court; the bus runs every 20 minutes about two minutes from my door, and drops me off right by my classes. It is very nice to live off campus, with the freedom, the cost, and the larger living spaces. I can’t speak for any other apartment complexes, but I am happy off campus.

As far as distance is concerned, the housing can be pretty convenient. It might only be a 5- to 10-minute walk to class. That usually means that it’s farther away from a major grocery store. In theory, it’s all within walking distance.
