College Prowler Take
While there have been problems with the safety and security of a handful of UD students, there is essentially nothing to worry about. Safety issues are not uncommon in a college atmosphere such as Newark, where alcohol and youth account for a good majority of the crime. UD is certainly no worse than any other large campus and, if you put a little effort into avoiding bad situations, you should come through college unscathed.
On a day-to-day basis, most students don’t really worry about security. While it is always wise to keep an eye on your belongings, crime isn’t a major focus. The number of muggings, attacks, and rapes has been quite high, with the result that students have been a little more aware of their actions. There are many safety features on campus that help get students from one point to another, but these same features sadly do not extend to off-campus locations. This weakness has been a major issue, as nearly half of all UD students live off campus, and UD has taken some steps to change it. No college is completely free of problems, but Newark is a small town that is relatively safe and secure.

If you are a girl, it is best to avoid fraternity houses or be very careful if you choose to go. Many have been kicked off campus recently because of rape and hazing charges. The University is trying to make the campus safe, but it is often the case that the students just don’t know about the safety options available to them and fail to take advantage of them. |

Security and safety are great if you are a big guy. If you are female, get mace and maybe a gun. |

The unfortunate thing is that in the past few months, the campus and the town has grown more dangerous, with a lot of people getting robbed on the street. There was an attempted rape and a couple more serious assaults. Someone who lived in Newark for a long time says that these crime waves come occasionally but go away after a while. I certainly hope it doesn’t become a lasting trend. |

The campus has been having some trouble with robbery and smaller crimes of that nature. The city of Newark is kind of a rough area, but normally it is totally hidden by the school. There were a few minor incidents, and the security on campus has doubled since then. If you want to find out about what happened, check the Delaware Web site and go to campus security where they have a list of any crime that has happened on campus. |

I feel fairly safe around campus....
I feel fairly safe around campus. I work until midnight, and have to walk through part of campus to get to my car. I guess there are enough blue-lights around campus, but I wonder if I really needed help, how long it would take for it to arrive. I know that there have been a number of incidents in the past few years with robberies and assaults, but only late at night do I ever feel uneasy. |

Did You Know?
Theft is the crime with the second highest number of incidences. Leaving your things unattended in the library makes you a prime target, so keep an eye on your things. Even books are a valuable commodity to a thief on campus.
Even if you are 21 or older, you cannot walk around in public with an open alcoholic beverage. You will receive a fine for an open container violation.
You can now get emergency contraception (also known as the morning-after pill) at the Health Center thanks to the activism of certain student groups.
