Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The laptop requirement at DU can seem like just another expense dumped on an already tight student budget. However superfluous it may seem initially, having your own laptop is an advantage. On a cold, snowy Colorado night, cozying up in your room in your pajamas while typing a paper is much more inviting than braving the biting air at midnight to hike to a computer lab. Also, many professors regularly update their students regarding class material via e-mail, so you might miss something important should you not have easy access to a computer. Many computer manufacturers offer students pretty good deals, and with a little research, you should be able to find a laptop that is relatively cheap. Buying a new laptop is preferable over scrounging around to find a used one. Chances are, if you’re using an outdated machine, you’ll become increasingly frustrated due to the fast pace of changing technology.

DU prides itself on being tech-savvy. The campus is slowly becoming wired throughout, and the computer labs, which usually aren’t too crowded, feature modern technology. Many of the computers in the labs are installed with specialized software that you may need for a certain class. Some students opt not to bring their own printers to school, which makes the labs handy when it comes time to print.

Totally Connected and Wireless

DU requires all students to have their own laptop, and the entire campus is wireless (which is super nice on a hot day sitting outside!). DU also has computer labs in most academic buildings and every residence hall, in case you forgot your laptop or it's not working. If you like super-fast internet, you can also use an ethernet cord in your dorm room or in class. You get LOTS of printer money so no need for a printer. Lastly, UTS (University Technology Services) is available if you have any computer trouble and it's FREE!

School of Education

I can only comment on the computers at the School of Education, since that's where I spend most of my time. We have a lab that has lots of computers, never have trouble getting one. There is also a printer there, which you can use for a fee, but grad students get money on their card for printing every quarter. The only slight complaint would just be that the lab isn't open that much on the weekends, which can be a pain if you don't pay to download some of the statistical programs on your personal laptop. This was a major reason why I decided to spring for that cost.

You Probably Want Your Own Computer

Overall, finding computers at the University of Denver is not a problem...mostly because the campus requires you to have your own laptop. I'm a commuter, so bringing my computer to school isn't always ideal. However if I need to use a computer on a day I don't have my laptop, it's not a huge deal. There are not a ton of places that have computers available (the library and the music lab are the two places that I typically go to), so who knows what it would be like without the requirement.

DU requires all incoming freshmen to purchase laptops. University Technology Services (UTS) offers free computer program training sessions on a quarterly basis. Both part- and full-time students (with a DU ID number) may attend the classes, which cover a variety of topics including Web development, Microsoft Office, and webCentral (DU’s primary e-mail server). Some of the classes also are offered online.
