College Prowler Take

Denver has much to offer for a broad range of tastes. Perhaps the best part of living in this city is the best of both worlds—big-city living and a rural landscape. Connoisseurs of fine art, sports nuts, and entertainment fans alike can find something to do in the metro area, but if things get too hectic, peace and quiet is no more than 45 minutes away in the beautiful, majestic Rocky Mountains. Some students complain that downtown Denver is the only place to party or find fun things to do, and that it’s too expensive and somewhat pretentious. However, Denver has many other places to party and have fun, you just have to look beyond downtown. The suburbs of Denver, such as Glendale, the Highlands, Littleton, and Lone Tree, have a unique feel all their own that can be refreshing when LoDo tries your nerves.

You don’t even need to get in a car to find something fun to do, because the area surrounding DU’s campus is constantly growing with new facilities, attractions, restaurants, and bars that appeal to DU’s restless students. Professional sports games are lively and entertaining, as are the many concerts and special events held in Denver by touring musicians and noted speakers. Walk through a maze of foliage at Denver Botanical Gardens, feed animals at the Denver Zoo, view dinosaur bones at Denver Museum of Nature and Science, or take in a show at the Temple Buell Theater.

DU is in Denver, but it is also its own community within the big city. All of the commodities of a big city are at hand, but the campus and student body are so small that a person never feels lost. There is so much to do in Denver—arts and events, sporting events, cultural events, and shopping. Being so close to the mountains also provides a lot of options for people interested in outdoor activities.

Downtown Denver is the only really fun place in the city, and even that can get pretty old weekend after weekend. Plus, some of the bars downtown are super expensive and kind of snobby.

Denver’s pretty cool. Some places around here, like restaurants and shopping, can get kind of expensive. I don’t think Denver’s really a college city; I think it’s more for yuppies.

You don’t really interact much with kids from other colleges unless you try to, which kind of sucks. It gets old being around DU kids all the time. CU Boulder is really fun. Try to make some friends there so you can go to the parties!

Denver is nice because of its variety. Drive 10 minutes off campus and you’re in the heart of downtown Denver, which is really exciting and fun. Or, drive 45 minutes or an hour south and you’re in the foothills or mountains, where you can go skiing or whitewater rafting.
