College Prowler Take
Although it’s tempting to equate a big city with high crime rates, DU and its surrounding areas are exceptionally safe. Probably the most serious campus-related incidents within the past few years have been attempted sexual assaults, but both DU’s security department and the Denver Police Department are quick to respond to campus concerns. The most common petty crimes, such as vandalism or theft, are usually related to excessive alcohol consumption at out-of-hand parties. Students often cite security services, such as the SafeRide shuttle program and 24-hour emergency phone stations, as particularly helpful in times of need. As is the case with any university, DU students should always be aware of their surroundings and try not to travel alone, especially late at night. However, for the most part, DU and Denver are safe, inviting, and non-threatening places to live.

Our campus is really well lit, so that makes you feel safe when you’re walking back to the dorms late at night, from being out or in the library or wherever. I have never heard of anything really bad happening. Maybe a couple of break-ins here and there, but that’s all. |

I have some friends involved in the campus safety program, and it’s a good program. They do a lot to make sure the campus is safe (which it is). The whole city of Denver is pretty safe, actually. |

All I know about the department of safety and security is that they patrol the campus all day and into the evening. I’ve also heard good things about the SafeRide shuttle program from a couple of my friends who have gotten way too drunk and stranded at parties. |

Well, I haven’t heard of anything really horrible happening on campus in the three years I’ve been around, so I’m assuming safety and security on campus is fine. |

The safety and security department...
The safety and security department people are great. They’re really nice, and they’re happy to answer any questions you have about being safe on campus. They provide students with things like whistles, pepper spray, and other safety precautions. All you have to do is go to the department and ask. |

Did You Know?SafeRide is a security transportation program initiated by DU undergraduate and graduate students. With a DU Pioneer (student ID) Card, students may be escorted around campus throughout the day, in addition to being able to take SafeRide back to their dorms during late-night and early-morning hours.
