College Prowler Take

The key word to describe Denver’s weather is variety. Some people incorrectly assume that Denver is caught in a perpetual blizzard. More accurately, all four seasons are represented, though they do seem to mesh into one another from time to time. Winters can be cold, but for the most part they are mild. Driving in the snow can be tricky, though, as roads sometimes become dangerously icy. Spring is pleasant and tends to reach high temperatures by late April, but there is the occasional March or April blizzard. Summers tend to be hot, offering little relief from rain, and autumn is beautiful and doesn’t tend to get too cold until early November. The best part of Denver is that it is sunny almost every day, no matter the temperature.

The weather gear shifts frequently, so while you may be battling slippery roads one day, bright sunshine will melt the ice away the next. Anything can happen with the weather in Denver; the trick is wearing lots of layers of clothing so you’re better prepared. Some people are surprised at how dry Denver’s air is. The low humidity can be good and bad, as it doesn’t get too muggy, but it can get uncomfortably hot. Generally speaking, temperatures don’t stay within the extremities for long periods of time.

Although Denver has a reputation for being cold and snowy all the time, it’s sunny 300 days of the year. Summers are hot, autumn is beautiful, and for the most part, winter is mild. It seems to snow the most in January and February, but don’t be surprised if you find a day in May with snow on the ground.

Bring everything from tank tops to winter parkas. Weather changes quickly here, but it’s good for variety. You wake up and have no idea what the weather’s going to be until you look out the window! The spring can get pretty hot, though, so be sure to bring summer clothes.

Let's just say...think about climate before deciding on a school. You may think that it is no big deal but coming from somewhere where it never snows to a place that snows half the year is a big adjustment. I was totally able to handle the snow but you need to be prepared!

Weather in Denver has something for everyone. If you like sun, you’ll get sun. If you like snow, you’ll get snow. I wish Denver had more rain, but usually, the air is too dry for that. We do get some wicked lightning and thunderstorms, though.

People think Denver is freezing...

People think Denver is freezing cold 12 months out of the year, but that’s not true. You should always be prepared for a random snowstorm or cold air here and there, but even the snow is fun. It’s really pretty, and it’s fun to play in! Once spring and summer roll around, it gets really hot.
