The University of Florida has everything a student looking for the typical American college experience could ever want. It's in a small town where the university dominates not only the social scene, but the economy. The athletic teams are excellent and we'll make a football fan out of even the greatest non-fan. School spirit and traditions are alive and well--on game day it's tough to find ANYONE not wearing school colors. The campus is gorgeous (and the student body is as well). It's everything I was looking for in my experience.
Being a part of football season during the Fall semester makes Gainesville a place like no other.

Food Was Good but Not Great; Decent Selection – I never got a meal plan, because I heard from other students that it was overpriced and that I'd be sick of the food halfway into my first semester. Every time I ate in the dining hall I enjoyed it, but I could see the food getting repetitive if I had to eat their every day. The dining halls try to have theme nights (Latin Night, Jewish Night, German Night, etc.) and I think they're actually pretty successful--even though I didn't have a meal plan, I would never miss a Latin Night at Broward.
My favorite part of the on campus dining was breakfast during the weekends. It's served all day and they even make Gator waffles! Great to stumble in around 1 or 2 PM after a long Friday night, still in pajamas, and look around and see everyone doing the same.
The dining options on campus where a meal plan is not accepted are excellent. The Reitz Union just got a major overhaul and now includes places more in tune with what students want (Pollo Tropical, Panda Express, Croutons--a designer salad place, Cheeburger Cheeburger, Subway, Taco Bell, and Orange & Brew, a coffee and beer-serving panini place that often has live music, comedy shows, or other fun activities).

Labs Are Great, but Free Printing Is More Trouble Than Its Worth – The labs are great--they're numerous, they're spaced out well over campus, and they have new, functioning computers. Free printing, however, is offered only in one of the labs, in the most hidden one, during hours that are convenient to no one, and there's always a line out the door. Better to just print at home or pay for printing at one of the other labs.

Parking at UF sucks if you're not a freshman or someone who works at UF. They basically say "Screw you," BUT I do have to mention the bus system is pretty decent so it's not all that bad.

Policies are very good on campus. They passed a ban on all smoking on campus recently.. awesome.. Or when in th library or the HUB food is pretty well accepted.

Available Student Areas – UF has fantastic amenities for the students. The gyms on campus are awesome and include nice swimming pools and all the exercise equipment you need as well as a room for any sport you can think of. Late hours too. Free bus service, printing services, computer help services, tons of amazing libraries with access to computers and any other electronic equipment you need, for example they have video viewing stations.

Greeks Taking Over the School – As a non-Greek, I can tell you Greek life is definitely a big part of our school. Though it doesn't make up most of the school, it does have an ample amount of power in the student government. Which is not what non-Greeks want. However, they do provide good parties so it works out.

University of Florida is a wonderful college that has years under it's belt helping students succeed in the real world. However, with all it's experience the University still needs some work. Though there are ample amount of study areas and different programs to get into, actually learning the material is quite difficult. Most of the professors don't actually teach you anything. You have to take the time outside of class to really grasp the material. UF needs to work with their professors in bettering how us students can understand the knowledge they are laying on us. Other than this, the University lives up to it's reputation.

Top Notch – The facilities at UF are great! There are about three gymnasiums. The Southwest Rec center was just renovated this month! The only downside is that it can get a bit packed... The Reitz Union holds many events including Gator Nights and various performances from diverse student groups.

Big School, Big Name – UF is the flagship university for the state of Florida. There are tons of organizations, protests almost every day, and quality professors. On the one hand, you are tiny fish in the gigantic ocean. On the other hand, now that I'm preparing for grad school, I am proud to say I attended probably the best university in the state of Florida, and one of the top public institutions in the country. I transferred here from UNF, a much smaller university, and while I liked UNF's atmosphere far more, I like UF's name more. Let me clarify- the weather is swamp-like, the campus is filled with traffic, smog, and noise, and it's often unbearably hot.

RTS Bus System – Buses are big. You can get on for free using your ID card. If you want to go anywhere, and you don't want to drive, this is your best option.

Gainesville-Towing Capital of US – Roam towing is big. I mean real big. You can count on every parking lot in the city having roam towing enforcement. I've had friends towed from an apartment complex even after being there for mere minutes.

From What I Understand Not That Bad – I come from Miami, perhaps it being such a party city, I am biased in the view that it isn't so bad at all. Also, this personal view is influenced by my major, I seriously don't have time or brain cells to spare and get hammered, nor do my peers, my classes and those of related majors are pretty horribly hard.

The University of Florida athletics program took second in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. The finish is the Gators' highest ever in national all-sports competition, as Florida's previous best was a tie for second in the 1997-98 standings.
Florida is the only program in the nation to finish among the nation's top 10 in each of the last 27 national all-sports standings.
The women's Swimming & Diving and men's Indoor Track & Field national championships led a program record 14 Gator athletic teams among the nation's top 10 in 2009-10. The previous high of 12 top-10 team finishes was achieved five times, including the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

Dorms Aren't So Great – The best part of living on campus is having everyone nearby, from peers & teachers to friends that if you commute everyday you would never get to see. You wake up & your class is that much closer, if you need a nap you won't have to necesarily take it at the library. I'd say it would be pretty convenient for many, but the noisy surroundings aren't conducive to engineering majors, it sort of encourages laziness, less attention in class, it's like working at home & without that separation for me the lines blur too much & I can't concentrate.

Health & Safety:
UF has their own campus police. They have plenty of police surveying and patrolling the area, for jaywalkers and cars/scooters/bicycles speeding over 20 mph.

Off campus housing selection at UF is quite varied. You have your more high-end apartments/townhouses/houses and you also have your older, less-renovated houses. You generally pay for what you get. The more you pay, the better, and higher quality things are.

If you have a medical condition...such as asthma...try going to your doctor to get a note and bring it to the medical infirmary at the university to get parking in the orange spaces...

Guys & Girls:
Typical Student Look – Looking around at the people on campus, there's a basic standard for what is seen: well-kept. Many different styles, different heights, different weights, different hair colors, different everything. It's nice to see such diversity :)
College Senior 2010-08-31T00:51:41Z
Dining Hall Meal Times – The time breakfast is served should definitely be longer, especially on the weekend. This is college: half the student population doesn't wake up til 10:30 AM or even later.

So Much Excitement! Gainesville, FL is an up and coming city that has so much to do; from canoeing/kayaking down the Santa Fe River, to biking around Paynes Prairie, or even the awesome Gator games and events (like Gator Homecoming). There's always something fun and exciting to do.

The University of Florida is pretty diverse considering the amount of student that attend this school. The academics are top notch, the university has over 900 clubs for students to get involved in and has lots of programs to promote diversity.

The computers are very fast and reliable. At the student center there is also free printing which is very helpful and convenient.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
