Always Busy – Gainesville is always busy including at night but I have not yet experienced it all myself.

There is plenty of parking, but you must have a permit.

RTS buses run every 15 minutes on weekdays, and every hour on weekends. Use the app for maximum efficiency.

Gainesville has a decent nightlife with a few clubs and bars scattered throughout midtown and downtown. However, there is not much to do outside of that.

It's pretty good I guess. I didn't go out much so I don't have much to say about it.

The dining halls have pretty good hours except for the face that they don't open till 10:30 on saturdays and sundays which is kind of annoying for those of us that don't sleep late. The food is decent, nothing spectacular but edible enough. They always have a sandwich making area and cereal if you don't want what they're serving. The food they make as a whole is pretty oily. I don't know why, but they seem to dump it on there.
There are quite a few options for restaurants though which is nice. There's Einstein, Chick-fil-a, Subway, Starbucks (everywhere), Pollo tropical, Moes, Croutons, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, Burger King and a couple others.

Gainesville is not exactly a huge town. Everything is pretty spread out which makes it more difficult to go to the store or even to hangout at the mall. The people are nice, but it's just not very big or a 'happening' place.

Sports at the University of Florida are a huge deal. Basically, the entire student body gets involved..especially the football. The gyms are great, lots of facilities for everyone, not just the athletes to use.

Guys & Girls:
I find that a lot of what you will see at UF are students in greek life. For example, if you go out to bars in our main strip called midtown you won't find the nerdy guitar playing "hipster," you will find a preppy fraternity boy who likes beer. Around campus a lot of girls like to dress comfortable in what I call the "sorority" look consisting of running shorts, nike shoes, a "frat" tank, but a fully made up face with curled hair. Others, like myself, prefer to dress in clothes that actually exude my personality from floral maxi skirts to high waisted shorts. UF has a variety of students and anyone can find someone or something to suit their taste. There is no one type on campus, we just think we all see one type.

I really struggled with financial aid for the upcoming year. Many of the required deadlines are not announced and it makes me upset that I missed out on something I deserved because my school didn't feel the need to advertise their requirements properly. I've never had a problem before, but they really disappointed me. While I am at fault for missing the deadline, they are at fault for causing many other students each year to miss out on the one thing that allows them to stay at this fantastic university. I suggest checking up with the financial aid office at the beginning of each semester to write down important deadlines so that these things do not happen to you. Failing to check up on deadlines is not worth losing money to go to school. It is also definitely not worth the hassle now of applying for new scholarships and dealing with dead ends in regards to financial aid.

There are fantastic and eclectic options that fit all tastes. Vegetarians, meat eaters, and even vegans can find something they will love. A lot of local restaurants in Gainesville pride themselves on using locally grown organic ingredients which I really appreciate because it's better for my health and the environment. While chain restaurants may exist at the University of Florida branching out and trying something new is worth it. If you're looking for a real Gainesville/UF experience try The Top. Everyone can find something they will like and it's priced well enough that you get good food without breaking your bank.

If you're into that kind of scene, then it's great, but it can be very divisive on campus. They have a tendency to run the major organizations of campus which can get very frustrating and is often unfair.

Health & Safety:
The heart of campus in most cases is safe, but it is never good to walk alone at night. We frequently get updates alerting us of crimes that have happened on or near campus. It's good to know what's going on, but I'd like there to be less to report about. Petty theft, especially bike theft, sometimes occur as well.

Public transportation is very good with many buses and late night transportation with a service called S.N.A.P. Parking however and parking decal costs are very expensive and inconvenient.

There are plenty of options for students who are under the age of 21 as well as options for those who are 21 and over. There is a nice variety for everyone on different days of the week.
College Sophomore 2013-05-28T18:29:34Z
The staff on campus is always looking out for the student's safety, however sometimes the RA's will choose to look the other way if they know that the residents are not doing anything to put themselves or others in danger. Also, they are very accommodating for treating their students like adults and letting them handle their consequences without getting family involved.

Excellent - clean, beautiful campus, libraries are top notch, athletic centers are state of the art.

Bus service is excellent and Gainesville is an extremely bicycle friendly town.

I am still trying to decide which career path to choose. If I stick with broadcasting I think I should be able to find a job.

It's rough if you are under 21 to go to the spots where your friends go.
College Junior 2013-05-28T11:49:24Z
I live off campus. Cost is a little more than a dorm. But have lots more room and family can come and visit. I do not have to move every semester though which is a plus.
College Junior 2013-05-28T11:47:00Z
Not very easy to find parking that does not require decals for family and friends who visit.
College Senior 2013-05-27T13:01:28Z
There are several places to choose from for off campus housing. However, prices does vary according to location from campus, but its not hard finding the right one for your budget.
College Junior 2013-05-24T01:26:54Z
The meal plan is expensive and most students don't use it. The dining halls offer okay food, but generally fast food is better. We have a Subway, and the Reitz Union has lots of places including a Burger King, Papa John's, and Starbucks. Firehouse Subs is right across the street from Library West, so it's not technically on-campus, but it's close.
College Junior 2013-05-24T01:19:30Z
There are buses that run between certain hours, but they can be unreliable and sometimes make students late for class. At night, SNAP, a student-run service, can give you a ride on campus so you never have to walk alone at night. GatorLift is available for students with permanent or temporary handicaps. The handicap-accessible vans can take you anywhere on campus, including all your classes.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
