Summers Are Brutal – The weather in Gainesville fluctuates with the seasons (we pretty much only get 2, some years 3) There is summer which is hot, humid, and filled with rain and thunderstorms. It's not unusual for it to be sunny on your way into class, and then it be pouring at class change. The winters are usually mild but sometimes it can get chilly. Most of the time it is hot in Gainesville with maybe 3 months of either bearable or cold weather. There is also no sea breeze so it can get muggy.

A Lot of Chain Restaurants – Most restaurants off campus are chains. That being said, they have most every chain that you could want within 20 minutes of campus (chili's, olive garden, outback, moe's, chipotle etc). However, there are a few mom and pop type places such as Satchels pizza and Leonardo's. Although they are few and far between, they are DELICIOUS!

Be Persistant – As soon as I was accepted to UF, I received the Presidential Scholarship. I constantly receive e-mails about current scholarships available. You have to be persistant and keep applying until you get another scholarship. I was able to become a FGLSAMP Scholar my Junior year and got a Grant.

Decent but Repetitive – The food is good for a dining hall but it gets old

Diversity and Help – The University of Florida is a great institution and I am glad to have had the opportunity to experience all it has to offer. The University of Florida is very diverse and I have met people from many different parts of the world. Another great thing about the University of Florida is that everyone i.e. staff members and students are always happily willing to help with any question or concern. Professors also make an effort to learn your name and help you during non-class hours.

Opportunities for Double Major – Don't limit yourself! Use your elective credits to count towards a second major. Don't let the general education courses be a waste...take things you are interested in. You never know, that might be your true calling!

It was a huge part of my life, and I have a lot of who I am today to show for my 4 years in a sorority. A word to the wise, if you try to hard to fit in or if you have your heart set on that one particular house, you will likely lose who you are in the process or get hurt in unnecessary ways.

Cheap, but You Get What You Pay for – Off-campus housing is a whole lot cheaper here than it is most other places in Florida and certainly out of state. Only problem is that you are prolly stuck living in a dump with a landlord who couldn't care less if you are in a complex that is traditionally students. Either that or your neighbors will entertain you with baby drama or arrest warrants and evictions. Maybe both!

Obviously laws are laws. There's no getting around that. However, UF has had plenty of reasons to celebrate with all of the National Titles recently. The campus and local police were all really laid back about it. Tens of thousands of people rushed the streets after each oft he championships, drunken, rowdy and out of hand, but the police were all cool with it so long as no one was doing anything to truly endanger others. Also, on game days, the cops turn a blind eye on drinking on our "dry" campus. However, any other day, they are quite strict.

Sexual Orientation – There are a lot of movements and pushes toward open-mindedness and acceptance on campus. However, Gainesville remains a rather backwoods, small southern town where there is still a lot of ignorance outside of campus boundaries.

Diverse Social Scene – There is always something going on in or around the University of Florida campus. There are numerous art centers where you are sure to see wonderful displays, fantastic plays and musicals, and riveting art shows. The nightlife scene surrounding campus is definitely geared towards college students. Definitely plan to spend a day at Paynes Prairie.

Shifty Wireless Connection – Having a laptop is incredibly necessary, especially during frantic exam weeks. Unfortunately, the WiFi is a little shifty. UF technicians are normally very good at resolving the problems as quickly as possible. Students are also given a generous free printing allotment in the Reitz Union, but for convenience sake it is nice to have your own printer.

Greek Influence – The Greeks definitely have a prominent impact on the school at UF. They're very involved in Student Government and run lots of philanthropic events for the benefit of the school and other organizations, but they often get a bad rep for being solely party crazy.

Hit or Miss – Parking on campus can either be hit or miss - you're either really lucky (or up really early) or you're looking up and down rows for a space. Chances of finding a spot increase with class year, and can also vary depending on what type of vehicle you're trying to park. It's much easier to find a spot for a scooter or a bike than it is for a car.

Expensive, but Convenient. Rent is around $400 for one bedroom in a 4 bed/2 bath. The proximity to the school is close enough and there is always bus transportation.

I did receive financial aid money, but if was most certainly a hassle trying to get in contact with a financial advisor. Not much is based on the actual person; just test scores and the school application.

Too Expensive – It's not too bad, but it's just not worth the price. Maybe the first year, to get accustomed to campus and make friends. HUME, however, is not worth the price ever.

Lots of Free Options – Impressed with the amount and convenience of the buses on campus. Many even run downtown for drunk students during the week nights until very late. There's also SNAP vans and biking and walking... and scooters. AND driving, although that's much more useful when dealing with things off-campus (not necessary to pay for a campus parking pass, in my opinion).

A Few Gems – With a university this big, there are inevitably going to be your joke classes and even your joke majors, especially the GenEd classes... but there are excellent professors and curriculums every now and then - but they can be few and far between, depending on your major.

Alcohol Is Everywhere, Drugs Are Easily Accessible – It seems like almost everyone drinks. You see groups of girls (usually freshmen) on campus blatantly intoxicated as they leave the dorms to go to a party/club. If you live in the dorms, your neighbors WILL have alcohol, and likely drugs. It's just everywhere, even though there's no tolerance for drugs.
College Senior 2012-07-20T22:01:54Z
Very Lively Atmosphere – There is always something to do at UF. Every weekend midtown is crowded with students looking for a fun night out. Then there's downtown with clubs, bars, and you name it. On game days campus is flooded with people from everywhere, filled with spirit. As for safety, there have been quite a few instances of armed perpetrators on/around campus; a couple times they've harassed students in some way. The campus police department keeps students well aware of anything like that though; they send emails and text messages with details and a description of the suspect, etc. It feels safe in general.

It's definitely convenient to have a meal plan, but that's about where the lists of benefits ends. The food feels unhealthy and the Broward Dining employees make you feel uncomfortable. The food court at the Reitz Union is awesome though; it's a nice clean environment with friendly workers and tasty food.

Civil Engineering – I enjoy the college of engineering at UF, some of the classes may be large but teachers are always willing to help. As you reach more difficult classes the number of students in each class lowers dramatically, so the interaction among other students and the professor is much greater.

Health & Safety:
Campus Police – The crime on campus is kept at a minimum. You can sign up for updates on your phone from UPD; they will inform if anything is ever going on.

Not Much Knowledge – I have yet to have the dorm room experience, however I have heard that some are a little outdated, while others are just like apartments.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
