While UF may be looking to save 1.2 million on cutting specific sections of libraries throughout campus (not good), they certainly are excited about athletics, student safety, and having fun activities available to everyone at all times. Reitz Union is amazing - very accessible and it's like a mini city with tons of food, resources, and important people. The Southwest Gym is exceedingly nice, as is the FL pool, stadium, and even the smaller racquetball gym near the Hub. Again, UF loves athletics and spends money on fitness like no other. Additionally, UF spends money on safety - which is necessary, but getting ridiculous. They're apparently installing cell-phone chargers stationed around campus, much like the the 'blue-light' stands that allow people in danger to call the police/call for help. General campus aesthetics are good - tons of people, busy, always something to do, lots of resources and trees.

The best/worst options in terms of dorm choosing are convoluted - while Broward is basically a s***hole, it's one of the most central and "happening" dorms on campus. Nicer dorms are actually more on the outskirts of campus, and while you would therefore have a higher quality of living, you'd be required to catch the bus every morning/often, and are farther away from spontaneous events and other central and significant buildings, such as Reitz. The social atmosphere on campus is above average. It's nice to just be around the tons of people moving around campus every day - it's not lonely, and everyone is always bustling off somewhere. Unfortunately it's difficult to make friends easily because even if you're outgoing and can start a conversation with a complete stranger, people are unlikely to give you their number or email and talk to you again if they don't see a real reason to. The ease of the housing process is amusing... since it's not very easy. Applications and requirements filled are simple enough, but trying to snag the room you want when you have a later housing registration date is frustrating and difficult/doubtful. It's the sheer number of students who apply for housing that makes this hard. The cost of housing is average/good - it definitely saves money.

Life Without Greek – It seems almost like a win or loose. You deffinitely always have the IN when it comes to clubs and bars. You meet a lot of people, and at a faster rate. Networking is huge. Once you know a member of a chapter you usually become friendly with more. Everyone secretly knows who the most popular girls and guys of each chapter hosue are and with that being said, jobs are a lot easier to get when you can emphasize that you are part of a large organization .

i feel that at UF when there is drinking there is also cocaine and even possibly molly involved. That is just the greek life crowd.

This year at the University of Florida, there has been a major acceptance of diversity, especially for the LGBTQ community. Even talking to students about diversity, the attitude has a very liberal approach and students are extremely accepting of people who have different backgrounds, political views, and ethnicities.

Drinking Is Popular – Access to alcohol is prevalent at UF. However, UF campus police are usually around everywhere so you have to be careful drinking on campus.

Farily Easy – Getting into the Accounting School was fairly easy and usually is the case for students with less than 60 credits (so freshman and sophomore). I had to schedule an appointment with an advisor and then I was given approval to change my major from Finance to Accounting. As long as your GPA isn't terrible you should get into the program.

parking zones are organized by amount of credits so underclassmen dont have many places they can park in but thankfully the bus system on campus is so awesome

So Fickle – for some reason, gainesville likes to change weather extremes from really hot days to really cold mornings. or when it turns into to most dreary and wet rainy, cold day

Job Fair – The career resourvce program at UF is amazing. Every year they host a job fair for all students and actual employers come where you can hand out your resume and make connections.

The strictness at UF to me is more average then strict or not strict. They punish when they feel like someone is deserving of punishment. The only strict part is parking which is just hell to go through. They will ticket for ANYTHING.

the computers on campus are great. The only problem is that there are way to many students for the amount of computers and tables available.

Rain, Burning Hot Sun, and Freezing Temperatures – I think the weather in Gainesville changes really quickly. Most of the time it will be really hot and humid, but it gets really cold in December to February. It will remain cold until mid-April and come with lots of rain. There will be hot days in the spring and suddenly relapse into really cool weather. Both for the most part, expect rain and lots of it.

The Usual Chain Restaurants – There are plenty of restaurants off-campus, but the variety of different types of food is a little disappointing. There are yogurt places, Americanized Chinese and Japanese restaurants, Vegan restaurants, and the usual Olive Garden, Bonefish Grill, Red Lobster, etc. There's still a good selection, but in comparison to Orlando, Gainesville still cannot compare.

Everything in Walking Distance but There Are Plenty of Buses – Really, everything you need is in walking distance. Buses are really helpful when you want to go grocery shopping and stuff like that and the routes go straight to important plazas. Buses and our nighttime patrol SNAP is free with a student ID, the only problem is sometimes when all the buses are off on their routes away from campus there is some waiting time.

Reasonable Priced Apartments – There are reasonably priced apartments that are rather nearby campus, however not walking distance. There is a good transportation system though, with many bus routes. Most people who live off campus use the bus system. Apartments walking distance from campus, however, are more expensive and out of most people's price range.

There is never a spot, and when there is it is really far away. Not worth paying for a decal.

Upperclassman Dorms Are the Best – The freshman dorms at the University of Florida are not quite worth the money. The only perk is the proximity to classes. However, the renovated older dorms, such as Murphrey Hall, are nice and worth staying in.

Not Enough Options Throughout the Week – Often the meals are repeated too close together so there are few options
College Junior 2012-05-10T19:55:17Z
Plenty of Options – There are several clubs which are pretty much packed with students downtown. The school is also right across the street from midtown which is just a street full of bars. So there is plenty to do. There are also plenty of bus services to accommodate students and encourage them to not drive.
College Junior 2012-05-10T19:51:07Z
Great Environment – I love the University of Florida, not only do you get the top education here but Gainesville is also a fun place to live in. There is plenty to do here, so much that many consider living there after graduation.
College Senior 2012-05-10T14:57:08Z
Not Too Shabby – It is a nice area to live in and you can meet some really cool people. The nightlife isn't as great as places like Orlando or Tampa, but it is all what you make of it. However, the advisors do not want to help you whatsoever. They are there to get paid and it shows.
College Senior 2012-05-10T14:54:50Z
All Over the Place – Everywhere you go you cannot escape the constant reminder that greek life exists on campus. They try and dominate the student government. They are also very cliquey. It's like high school drama all over again.

Finding parking at UF is difficult. If you buy a parking pass it gets easier but you will only be able to park in the lots marked the same color as your pass. This isn't always convenient because the color lot you buy a pass for isn't always near your classes. While there is meter parking around campus it is next to impossible get during peak hours. Parking tickets are given out like candy, there seems to be no end to the police officers that give tickets. If you get too many tickets in a term you can loose your permit as well.

Very Popular – I wasn't a member of a Panhellenic sorority but I was in an executive position in Student Government so I had frequent dealings with them. I found most of the fraternities and sororities at UF to be quite friendly and welcoming. People not involved in Greek life tended to have a negative view of it and while there were of course bad eggs, I would say on the whole, they had a positive impact on the campus. Greek life dominated the social scene as well as Student Government.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
