A lot of computer labs and on campus printing, but the wireless internet access does not always work as fast as one would hope.

Parking is limited...especially for 1st year students. Parking tickets handed out like candy...is this just an easy source or revenue for the college?

Limited Options – If you are not on the meal plan and use the dining hall, dining options are limited and do not provide the healthiest choices. Food courts are often very crowded during peak periods and makes dining a chore.

I Don't Do Sports – I don't like sports but if you do this school has everything. Great games to watch, clubs, teams etc. And no matter your level you can find a team to play on or support. Considering how much money they spend on football compared to the art program....we must have the best team on EARTH.

Lots of People – The University of Florida had so many students it would be weird if the student population wasn't diverse. Typically There are alot of white students, but there are also many asians, african americans, indians, hispanics, etc. There are also a lot of foreign students I hear different languages every day. I would say people are very accepting and friendly regardless of race, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation. Religion is also diverse but mainly Christian. Basically there is a club/greek house for everything you can imagine so even quiet people like myself can make friends. Just remember rich caucasians near sorority row, artsy kids near the arts buildings, jocks near the stadium etc.

Art Major...For the TRUE Artist – Im a drawing major hopeful at UF.So at UF if you are interested in ceramics or graphic design I would recommend the school. The teachers are well informed and you will learn a lot, specifically in ceramics. In fact this is true for all art majors. Although most intro courses are taught by graduate students not actual professors. If you are coming here for painting or drawing be prepared to deal with broken easels no proper tables or chairs and a lot of out of pocket expenses because your class fees don't cover anything. Oh and be ready to clean because the building has one janitor. I can't speak for graphic design, but I know they accept a limited number of students to the program and most don't get in....so find something to do for a year and umm reapply? Most classes are 3 hours, and longer in upper level courses. The work load depends on the specific class but is doable. The 3 hour classes are not bad considering work time. Students are nice and laid back and so are most faculty. The problem with this program is you end up taking classes in art that are not specifically related to your major so by spring of your fourth semester when you are applying to your specific major (drawing, photo, etc.) you may not know if you want to be in the program. Also after two years of putting up with nonsense there is still a chance you may not get into your desired major...and then you get into your second choice. For most people pursuing art as a profession this can be frustrating. So if your "free spirit" wants to be in a program cross your fingers (graphic design students) and hope you get in. Otherwise most people get into their majors and its all good. Overall the program is decent but not spectacular.

My campus is tobacco free, which is great. Drinking is considered a "huge" thing, but in reality its not. To get alcohol and be underage is extremely difficult if you don't know someone over 21, because they don't fall for fake IDs since they always swipe the fake ID. Also, all stores must stop selling at 2 in the morning, and at 11 or 12 on sunday. As for drugs, I've honestly never seen anyone do anything besides weed at a party. However, some girls in my psych class used the classroom bathroom to do coke right after class! It was disgusting. They belonged to a sorority.

Greeks run the student union, which sucks because scooter parking keeps going up, and even though I vote for a different leader, they always get the spot in office. Greeks are viewed by others as rich kids, because pledging at UF is extremely expensive. But, Greeks definitely don't dominate the social scene, so its not a big deal if you don't pledge. There is a funny story about the alligator that gets painted by the frat members of a house. Its a funny UF tale.

Health & Safety:
Health and Safety – Mold was growing in one of the dorms and the university basically didn't do a thing about it for a long time. And I heard it was really gross. Also, you can get sick from mold and spore growth so... as for health, I wouldn't say its the healthiest. There is a free clinic which is small and outdated for the large amount of students, but its "free" (not really because we pay for "health care" in out tuition payment, but other procedures are also greatly reduced for students because of the teaching hospital, Shands! The campus is pretty safe, there are texts sent to students when something happens, and only 3 things have occurred this year (including the blowing up of a lab). I feel like the security is mediocre though, UFPD is MUCH more concerned with giving out tickets for speeding than anything else. EXAMPLE: A lady crashed into me on my scooter on campus, and then left without stoping, and a cop was watching and did NOTHING. I then asked him why and he said there was nothing he could do anyway because I didn't fall over (but my scooter has a scratch now... so yeah I could have been hurt for all he knew). Also, the campus is ridiculously dark, not safe to walk alone after dark at all.

There Are Rules, Then There a Exceptions – Some technical rules seem to be too strict, but when it comes to important matters protocol is followed and justice is fair.

I've only eaten there once, and all though they change the menu very often the outcomes are not always very tasteful. If you run across a favorite that's not usually there like cookies, pizza or drinks, good luck finding it again. As far as the restaurants, some are good like you would find them off campus. Others, could use some work

The Best – Any opportunity you want here at the University of Florida, you;ll be able to find it. I've rarely had serious problems with them and it really does seem to be a fare, wholesome, environment.

For in state kids the prospect of Bright Futures Scholarships seems almost too good to be true. That's because it is. The state of Florida will promise you full tuition and then take it all away because they no longer care about education. Want financial aid? Not if you're white, have parents that are still married, and are middle class. Good luck paying for college, you'll need it.

Ate There Once, Never Again – Maybe I'm overly pampered at my sorority house but the food available in Gator and Broward Dining is sub par. The food is overpriced and lacking in taste. I get more nauseous walking past the buildings than hungry. The restaurants on campus are quite good, especially Chik fil A but they don't have the specials and discounts offered in their off campus sister locations.

Old but Improving – While our athletic facilities are unmatched on any college campus, the rest of the campus struggles to keep up with the times. Classrooms lack air conditioning, most dorms are barely livable, and a lot of campus just seems dated. However, I love the red bricks adorning every building and the school is making renovations slowly but surely.
College Junior 2012-01-20T16:12:36Z
Greeks Are Very Popular – There are so many Frats and Sororities but being that the campus is so huge, they don't dominate the college. Its fun to go to their events and party at a Frat but you won't be a loser if you never join one either.

Health & Safety:
Skeptical Safety – The campus police seem more involved with giving bike tickets then they do about protecting the students. I never felt unsafe but I have heard of sketchy people making it on campus before.

Know Your Professors – I am currently on the Pre-Law track in order to enter into Law school. The course load is what you want it to be since there is no major that you have to take. The class sizes can be very big so its important to make the effort to know your professors. Its all about networking.

Amazing Atmosphere – UF is such a beautiful campus. Gainesville is the true definition of a college town- everything revolves around the university. There is such a diverse student population with almost a 1,000 student organiztions. Everything from club sports and literary magazines to humans vs. zombies and the rock, paper, scissors club. Popular night life, but studying is a necessity. And few schools can match the pride of the Gator Nation!

Almost Any Restaurant You Can Think of – From Carrabba's, Chipotle, Panera Bread, to Bone Fish Grill. Most of the restaurants can be found on Archer Road or University. Most chain restuarants can be found there. There are also alot of good local places like the Peach Valley Cafe, Mi Appa, and especially Mochi (a fro-yo place with 3 different locations around town). Prices are moderate, but you can find a lot of deals since Gainesville is a college town.

Varied Options Despite Meal Plan – Although the meal plan is convenient, the options get repetitive after awhile. Places are around campus and in the student union are cheap options and varied- even vegan-friendly. Convenience stores are located in multiple places around campus if you're in a jam or just feeling too lazy to go to the store.

RTS All the Way – Buses are the best option to get around UF. Admission is free with your Gator-1 card, and they can take you all around Gainesville. It's all about knowing the routes. If waiting for a bus doesn't work for a busy schedule, however, scooters are another great way to navigate UF. With lots of tight roads and low speed-limits, they're another easy way of getting around.

Great Food Options for an Off-Campus Student – I live off campus, so I normally use UF's dining services for lunch at the Reitz Union. The are are an array of food options, from Chickfila and Tacobell, to nicer options like a gormet salad restaurant and Starbucks. All the spots are affordable and quick.

Florida can be a pretty rainy state, so make sure to buy some rain boots, rain coats, and a nice umbrella that can brace the winds too.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
