It's Like a Salad! To my surprise the University of Florida is actually a very culturally diverse campus. Yes the minorities are still minorities but out of the 50,000 students a good portion are composed of students who aren't white.

The Opportunities Are Endless. The University of Florida has the only Vet School in the state of Florida which is the main reason I decided to attend the school. I am constantly sent emails giving me the opportunity to help further my career in Veterinary Medicine whether its through volunteer work or through internships.

Majority White – On the UF campus there a majority of white people, but we still have a lot cultures present. On an average day you could see almost every culture present in the world. The best way to describe UF diversity is unique.

If You Want Some, You Can Get Some. If you're interested in drugs or alcohol you can definitely get some; personally I don't drink often and have never been pressured into anything I wasn't comfortable with. You pretty much do what you want and no one bothers you unless you're blatantly underage and in the face of R.A.s or the police.

Go Gators! The football games are unlike anything else I've ever experienced. When you see the thousands of students doing the Gator chomp around the stadium, it's an absolutely amazing feeling. Despite our rocky season, it's still a whole lot of fun to go to the games.

Sometimes it's fantastic, the wireless internet that is, other times it kicks everyone on my dorm floor off for a few hours. Generally speaking it's fast and mostly reliable. Don't go into the school with McAfee as your anti-virus, it often doesn't let a McAfee protected computer connect to the internet at all because that's the single anti-virus that doesn't show the UF network that it's updated.

Academics are okay, dorms are run down. it is hard to meet new people at a school so large. you never sit next to anyone in class twice, so it is hard to get to know people. the best way to get to know some people is by living in the dorms, even though it is gross.

Fill out FAFSA A.S.A.P. and get work study. They aren't going to give you much.

Most Students Get Aid from the State – The state of Florida has a scholarship program for Florida residents that covers most of tuition. Along with that I know that we have a website with all the scholarships available to students. The financial aid department automatically searches for students that meat the requirements for some scholarships.

The computers are great. One can usually find some available anytime of day. Many people do have their own computers though. Their is a free printing lab on campus. The wireless is usually good. There is the occasional hiccup on the housing internet.

Occasional Leniency – I have not had many experiences with strictness in my time at UF, but I do know they can be strict about underage drinking in some circumstances. On the otherhand, during dorm checkout many RA's do not care if you have drugs or alcohol in your room, they only ask you to either hide it or take it home with you when you are not living in your dorm.

Grab a Bite Off-Campus – Surrounding the UF campus are many restaurants to quench your stomachs hunger. The variety is excellent and includes Italian restaurants such as Carrabbas, American classics like McDonald's and Checkers, and other favorites such as Krispy Kreme, Olive Garden, and Mochi. The decisions are endless and each offer a variety of prices. If you're in town check out Bento Cafe, a sushi and Asian cuisine restaurant that is sure to send you home satisfied!

The University of Florida is a beautiful campus that boasts brick buildings, multiple libraries, and Southwest Recreation Center. The libraries are multi-purpose and very enjoyable. Each library is comfortably decorated and yields itself to the study habits of its students. My favorite place of all is the Southwest Recreation Center. This two-story building houses a basketball court, weight room, multiple rows of equipment and an indoor track.

During the week, buses run from about 6 or 7 am until 3 am. They go anywhere in town that you need to be. If you live on campus, or in an apartment complex with a bus stop out front, you don't really need a car. And the best part- the buses are free with a student ID!

Definitely in the Sunshine State – It rarely rains in Gainesville hard enough to disrupt your schedule. It is generally sunny and warm, if not hot in the summer months. Shorts and flip flop weather is required the majority of both semesters

New and Improved Gym – The brand new gym on campus is wonderful and the bus runs every 5 minutes to transport you there and back whether you live on or off campus. UF has also increased the number and variety of group fitness classes you can take via registering online

Variety for the Adventurous – Gainesville has a wide variety of places to eat especially if you are vegetarian. If you're willing to leave behind the many chain options there are some one-of-a kind restaurants that are great!

Health & Safety:
Relatively Safe Atmosphere – I rarely feel unsafe on the University of Florida's campus. The UF alert system helps to keep students aware of attacks and incidents in the area and SNAP provides great services to help students stay safe after dark. Most safety concerns seem to be derived from the decisions of those involved.
College Junior 2011-12-24T06:45:35Z
Drinking Is Popular – There isn't much peer pressure to do drugs or do alcohol. Hear lots about drugs on campus but have't actually seen anything.
College Junior 2011-12-24T06:40:13Z
Not Too Shabby – I feel like the dining hall doesn't really fill you up, and the taste is average. Fortunately, there are lots of great options to spend flexbucks when I'm craving variety.

Very Good and No Complaints – The facilities are really great, and offer so many different activities. It is also very nice that getting to the athletic centers are super easy. The libraries are great places to study, and I can always find an empty table to do work.
College Junior 2011-12-23T22:52:36Z
Doesn't Really Effect Much at All – The only terrible thing with weather in UF is that it gets really really really hot during the summer where you start sweating like crazy by just sitting out in the sun. It's very humid. The weather is also very fickle. It usually rains randomly but usually around 3pm and also pretty frequently but very light rain. During the Winter, weather changes within hours. It can be freezing like crazy one minute and hot and humid the next. This winter, i'm wearing shorts for most of the time and it's currently December. However, because we don't have snow or anything violent usually, it does not affect classes. Heavy Rain could cancel sports activities but not classes unless the professors really feel that they should cancel.

School is very strict with security. Getting into dorms require keys to at least two doors or more. There are blue towers everywhere and all students are notified if there is slight trouble on campus or near campus by email. Police are all over campus which makes it nearly impossible to speed on campus without getting a ticket. You have to be quiet after quiet hours or you do get written up.
College Junior 2011-12-23T22:36:54Z
Very Busy – The computer lab at the reitz union usually has a line where you have to sit outside. This is often during the weekdays. You should keep in mind that it will take at least 30 minutes to print a single paper out. Also there is wireless throughout the entire campus as long as you have your school ID and password. However, throughout my semesters the entire campus has dealt with internet wireless failure. Wireless failures can last from 30 to hours. You should always have a backup reliable.
College Junior 2011-12-23T21:02:12Z
Buses Are Good and Bad – The buses run everywhere so that makes it really convenient. However, if you miss the first bus, you risk being late to class because you wait, at maximum, 25 minutes for the next one to arrive. Also, sometimes the buses are extremely crowded and full and so you either stand squished uncomfortably to the person next to you, or you have to wait for the next one.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
