School Spirit
On the whole, UF students could not be more excited about their alma mater. The University of Tennessee football game in September, Homecoming in early November, and the Florida State University football game in late November are especially fun (and quite insane) times for showing school devotion, but any day is a good day for a Gator shirt or ball cap, both of which can be seen all over campus. In fact, just about everybody around here seems rather invested in the Gators-have you ever heard of an entire county closing the schools one day each year so the students can march in a University Homecoming parade? Alachua County does, and when you see the gigantic parade, you know they could never leave those orange-and-blue-bleeding kids out of it.
Getting Tickets
If you don't have football season tickets, prepare to dish out more than your week's allowance for some-if you're lucky enough to find a spare ticket in "TitleTown." Season tickets for football become available through a lottery-based system during the summer. They are the only tickets students have to pay for and are around $80 for the season. If you can't snag a coveted season ticket, your next option is to go to Gatorzone.com, UF's Ticketmaster-like website, every Thursday before a home game. However, be prepared for major delays and the website crashing since thousands of other kids will be doing the same as you. If you're lucky enough to get a ticket through the site, you then have to go and pick it up at the student ticket office at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Friday. Note: go with whomever you want to sit next to because the tickets are assigned in the order they are picked up. Men's basketball games are sometimes difficult to get tickets for, too. But, for any of the sporting events on campus besides football, students only need to show their Gator card at the gate.
Best Place to Take a Walk
The entire campus is perfect for walking, but it's more interesting if you stay out of the vast, less active Southwestern section and closer to the academic buildings and dorms where there are people around.
