College Prowler Take
Greek life is pretty big here. Only about 15 percent of students belong to social fraternities and sororities, but for one thing, 15 percent of UF's large population is a lot, and for another, Greeks tend to be very active in student government, the Student Alumni Association, and other campus organizations, which means you see and hear them pretty frequently. On the other hand, 85 percent of the student body adds up to an even larger bunch—definitely enough to ensure that those outside the Greek system have plenty of company. By no means is it necessary to join up in order to have a good time during your stay in Gainesville, and there are a million other ways to get involved with the University and have a good time. If you decide to pledge, keep in mind that you’re going to have to budget your time uncommonly well. If you don’t pledge but have friends who do, try to stay supportive; it’s not an easy semester for the baby Greeks. If you don’t care about this stuff at all, great; that’s one less (big) thing to worry about. But what everyone should remember is this: people joke around about the “differences” between Greeks and independents, which is something very different from actually using those so-called differences to make decisions about who should and should not be friends.

I wouldn’t really know what Greek life is like. I used to think you could tell someone was Greek by looking at them, but that’s not really true. Whether the social life is dominated by Greeks mostly depends on where you hang out. If you go to a lot of frat parties, then yeah, it is. I think places closer to campus are more dominated by Greeks, like Gator City, the Grog House, and the Swamp. The farther downtown you go, the safer you are if you are trying to stay away from the Greeks. |

There is a big Greek community, and if you want to join, there are plenty to choose from. I personally chose not to and I don’t think that I missed out on anything. |

Greek life is very big at UF....
Greek life is very big at UF. There’s a diverse group of sororities and fraternities. It doesn’t dominate the school, but you pretty much can’t go anywhere without seeing someone wear a T-shirt or carry a bag that has his or her frat/sorority letters. They’re usually pretty lenient when it comes to including everyone in the party scenes. The frats can really throw a party. It’s definitely something that I would recommend getting involved with, if that’s your type of thing. |

The social (and political) scene...
The social (and political) scene on campus is pretty much dominated by Greeks. If you want to get into student government or anything like that, you better decide which fraternity or sorority you want to join. |
