College Prowler Take

I believe it was Roy Orbison who said “Anything you want, you got it, baby,” and he was right on the money when it comes to bars and clubs in Gainesville. There are house parties, frat parties, bars that are more like grills (Swamp), bars that are more like clubs (Grog House), clubs that are exactly what you’d expect (Sky), clubs that cater to the gay and lesbian population (University Club), and clubs with multiple personality disorder (8 Seconds, where it’s Chad Brock and line dancing one second and Ludacris and booty dancing the next). There are even places just short of perfect, combining restaurant, bar, and club in one cool package.

The only thing to do is try them all out—in a responsible way, of course, and preferably with a Later Gator ride and several of your friends to keep you company. You’ll soon figure out where to go dancing Thursday night, where to have a beer Friday afternoon, and where to party Saturday night; in fact, it’s a matter of honor—UF has to defend its title as the number-one party school in the country. It’s a tough job, you know, but someone has to do it, and Uncle Albert wants you!

Well, UF has a lot of clubs and a lot of bars. Some people go to both clubs and bars, but most people are one-or-the-other types. CJ’s is a popular bar, as well as Gator City. I would say those are the two most popular. 8 Seconds is a fun club for the country scene, which everyone here seems to like at one point or another.

As for bars and clubs off campus, there are plenty. I recommend trying them all to see which ones you like. Names and owners of clubs and bars change pretty frequently around here, so when you find one you like stick with it. If you want to dance, go to Fat Tuesdays, The Bank, or 8 Seconds.

Parties on campus are rare, except Greek parties, which are pretty much like off-campus parties, but not as cool because you have to be more careful if you are underage drinking (not that anyone does that of course). Frat parties are a good way to meet people if you’re a freshman. Off-campus parties (a lot of the time close enough to campus to walk back to your dorm) are not rare.

The parties on campus are mostly Greek parties. Most parties are off-campus at apartment complexes. I prefer house parties hosted by people I actually know. The clubs are busy Thursday and Saturday nights. I’m not much of a club kid, but Bank, Market Street, and 8 Seconds are pretty popular places.

I can’t say much about parties on campus as I didn’t attend many. I didn’t do a lot of club and bar hopping either, but I could recommend a few. The Swamp and Durty Nelly’s are pretty cool. The Market Street Pub is a fantastic place in the afternoon if you don’t want to deal with a loud, obnoxious crowd. It’s not as popular at that time of day, but it should be because they serve great food and drinks at prices every student can afford. You can sit and relax or hear music and dance. The best way to get acquainted with the bars, once you’re 21 of course, is to participate in Gator Stompin’. That way you get to sample the big ones.

Facts

Club Crawler

The first thing to keep in mind in Gainesville is that many clubs follow the “here today, gone tomorrow” routine. The second thing to remember is that drink specials and cover charges also vary widely, so you’ll just have to check them out yourself. You can get into a lot of these clubs even if you’re not 21, and don’t forget to bring lots of money for additional charges.

Bar Prowler

Bars tend to stick around a little longer than clubs, but they do change their specials pretty frequently. Although you can go to a lot of these places before you’re 21, almost all of them have 21-and-over nights. Something else to remember is that even though the following places are in the “bar” section, a lot of them offer “club-type” dancing as well.

Organization Parties

University academic departments and clubs do have parties—they’re typically more along the lines of a picnic at the lake.

A one-time Playboy College Bar of the Month, Bank is a little more upscale than its G-ville neighbors, though it still attracts a primarily college crowd. Good Martini variety available.

Fat Tuesday has a Mardi Gras theme (obviously), and is especially popular on Thursday nights, when Daiquiris are $1.50 from 10 until close. Tuesdays typically feature live music and $1 drinks all night long.

Fat Tuesday

116 SE First St.

(352) 375-3466

Gainesville’s gay and lesbian club, which features drag shows on Thursday nights. Happy hour is 5 p.m.–9 p.m. every weeknight during which University Club offers (varying) drink specials and free pool.

University Club

18 E. University Ave.

Line dancing all night, and one of the best places for it in Gainesville—assuming you don’t mind the occasional awkward synthesis of hip hop and country. Thursday is Ladies’ Night; women and cheap drinks all around.

A popular Greek hangout, the Swamp can be an oddly expensive place to grab a drink, despite its dive-ish atmosphere. Still, if you don’t mind $3 beers in a town where you’ll usually pay $1, the Swamp is a popular, crowded, and often fun place to spend an evening.

A true dive, Grog House is a packed, cheap, fun college hangout (if that’s your scene, anyway). The place can get somewhat sketchy after last call, but with a different drink special every night, the Grog House remains one of the cheapest places to get a drink in Gainesville.

Affectionately referred to as “CJ’s” by UF students, Calico Jack’s is one of Gainesville’s most popular nightspots and restaurants, especially to catch a game. The cheap wings and oysters—particularly the latter—are excellent, and the occasional live music only makes the place even more popular.

Every college town seems to have some establishment that offers a “best pint of Guinness,” and in G-ville, that’s Durty Nelly’s. The Irish pub-style atmosphere makes the place a little more upscale than some of the other area bars, but Durty Nelly’s still attracts quite a big college crowd.

Gator City offers cheap food and drinks throughout the week and several plasma TVs for watching sports. Wednesday is Ladies’ Night (free well drinks for ladies, $1 Bud bottles for everyone else). Obviously, there are a few pool tables, too, and you can use them for free before 7 p.m. on weeknights.

Gator City Sports Grill & Billiards

1728 W. University Ave.

Half of this establishment is an English pub, while the other half is a dance club, so the place attracts a varied crowd depending on the night. Some nights feature live blues, while others spin ‘80s dance mixes.

Market Street Pub

120 SW 1st Ave.

Possibly the most popular bar in Gainesville, the Salty Dog serves up inexpensive drinks all day, every day (particularly domestic pitchers). There’s no particular atmosphere or vibe to the place, just a general come-and-hang-out mentality that consistently attracts bargoers every night of the week. The place also offers an enormous beer selection.

Rue Bar has five bars, an outdoor courtyard, and several VIP sections. Ladies night is on Thursdays, and has live music and a free keg. There's a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays.

Side Bar doubles as a bar and live music venue, though some might say it’s a little too small to be effective as the latter (and they’d have a point). Still, the music is usually excellent, and the beer is usually really cheap. Cover varies depending on the particular band, but it’s usually around $5 or less.

Side Bar

15 SW Second St.

The Top offers sort of an alternative vibe, probably due to its extensive vegetarian menu. Known more as a restaurant during the day, The Top does offer decent drink specials and an extensive wine list, making it a popular place among students during weeknights.
