College Prowler Take

If you like and require candles, dogs, cats, snakes, incense, or more than four appliances plugged into one outlet via surge protectors, off-campus housing is the way to go, because none of those things is what you would call “allowed in the dorms.” Other advantages to getting away from the 32612 zip code are having extra space, private (or at least more private) bathrooms, full-size refrigerators, and fluffy toilet paper (should you choose to purchase it, I mean).

Parents, however, are not usually that worried about your space requirements or TP preferences. No, their concerns can generally be summed up in two questions: 1) are you gonna be able to drag your sorry rump to class on time every morning? and 2) is it going to cost less than a space flight? Fortunately for you, the answer to both of these questions is generally “yes.” Buses make getting to campus a reasonably easy task, and there’s a decent apartment for almost everybody’s wallet, but both of these require a little forethought and strategy. If that sounds like a problem, take a year to practice in the dorms (It’ll be fun! I swear!). On the other hand, if you can make a plan you just might be ready for off-campus digs.

Very conveniently, most apartment...

Very conveniently, most apartment complexes have a bus system that takes you right to campus. A lot of the apartments are also fully furnished (if you want) so moving is a lot simpler and cheaper! They have every size, with every amenity available. Check out www.go-rts.com for a bus schedule, click on apartments and you can see the system. There are a lot of apartment links, too. If you’re looking for off-campus housing your first year, I don’t suggest it.

The convenience of off-campus...

The convenience of off-campus housing varies by the complex. There are some apartments close to campus, but you’ll pay a pretty penny to live within walking distance. If you get an apartment, pick one off at least one bus line. Then you shouldn’t have too much problem if you plan your time right.

Truthfully, most people live on campus for one year or none at all. There are a million places to live off campus and almost all of them (if not all of them) have buses directly to campus. Many of them are walking distance, too. There is a wide range, from really upscale and expensive to the less expensive.

I didn’t live off campus until graduate school. If you choose an apartment complex or house close to campus that offers the amenities that you are interested in, it is worth it. But for the first year or two, living on campus can be a good experience. If you have trouble finding compatible roommates, you want to have dogs or cats, or you are a very private person, then you may want to live off campus.

If you are only looking at cost,...

If you are only looking at cost, then living on campus is best. However, we have bus service to campus from almost all apartments in Gainesville. Most of these bus frequencies are between 10 and 20 minutes. Most importantly, the bus fare is free.

The service is completely free, because the complexes pay to be listed with them, and although they don’t work with every single apartment in Gainesville, they do have a very wide range.
