College Prowler Take

In general, Gainesville has the best of all possible worlds regarding weather. During the summer, it’s extremely hot and sunny with afternoon showers almost every day. Fall goes from October until maybe the beginning of December—cool enough for jeans during the day, a little chilly at night (i.e. perfect sleeping weather), lots of sun, and enough autumn color to cause south Floridians to run to their botany professors in sheer delight. Winter can get a little cold—it’ll be in the 50s, 60s, and 70sduring the day, but mornings and evenings can get down to the 30s or even the 20s. And when March rolls around, the temperatures are a lot like those in fall, but the light changes and you can tell it’s going to start heating up.

Gainesville’s weather is also variable enough to be interesting—people from the Yukon or Miami will be surprised to learn about seasons—but with a relatively gentle, temperate taste of the possibilities; when you’re sweating your head off in July or freezing to death in January, just remember this: you could be going to school in North Dakota, where the state slogan is "Land of 44 below zero winters and 109 degree summers."

The weather is hot, requiring tank tops, shorts, and sandals for the first half of fall and the second half of spring (and of course all summer). In winter, jeans and a sweatshirt or warm jacket will be fine. Don’t forget to keep an umbrella in your bag at all times.

The weather is fabulous. Bring lots of shorts, sunglasses, and a compact umbrella for unexpected showers in the summer. I would also bring a few pairs of pants and a lightweight jacket.

The weather is definitely very, very hot during summer and the beginning of fall. Bring plenty of shorts, sandals, and T-shirts. Even though Florida is the Sunshine State, you can also expect a lot of rain. Bring a windbreaker and keep an umbrella in your backpack. It will start pouring at a moment’s notice. Also, don’t assume it doesn’t get cold in the winter. It can get into the 30s, especially at night. Some jeans, sweatshirts, and a warm jacket should get you through though.

The weather in Gainesville varies. During the summer it is often hot, humid, and sometimes raining. Therefore, bring your shorts, tank tops, T-shirts and trusted umbrella. In the winter, especially January, it gets as cold as twenty-four degrees along with a breeze. Bring your coats and gloves.

Gainesville is cooler than southern and the rest of central Florida, but obviously much warmer and less variable than weather anywhere farther north. Have shorts and short-sleeved tops for the early fall, late spring, and all of summer. Definitely pack some jeans and lighter long-sleeve shirts. If you’re not used to cold, Gainesville has been known to get at or below freezing, so pack some winter weather stuff, too.
