Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Football is God for many people at UGA. The alumni support for our Dawgs is tremendous. They often show up in their RVs and trailers on Thursdays for a Saturday game. Alumni settle all over campus, and you will pass many of them grilling and drinking on your way to Friday classes, should you actually choose to go. There is an overwhelming feeling of pride for our Dawgs on game days, especially from the Alumni who were around for the low points. Football games are the place to be on Saturdays, and many town businesses shut down until the weekend is over. Sanford Stadium holds more than 92,000 people, and it is almost always jam packed or sold out. The other varsity sports programs have smaller followings and receive minimal press. Basketball games are a lot of fun and usually draw a decent crowd. The band attends basketball games, so there’s always that excitement and entertainment. Our women’s gymnastics team is very good, and the gymnastics meets are becoming more and more popular with the student body. Many local Athenians and children attend the meets. Swimming is also pretty popular, as the teams consistently do pretty well, and the facilities are awesome.

Intramural sports are really popular for fitness and recreation. Some of the teams are really good, and others are just horrible. So, at any level, you’ll find your niche if you are interested. It seems like everyone has a lot of fun doing participating, though. Ramsey has excellent swimming, basketball, racquetball, and volleyball facilities, and the intramural fields are extensive. They include football and soccer fields, softball and baseball diamonds, tennis courts, walking trails, and even a large field for ultimate Frisbee players.

UGA Football (Period)

There is nothing like game day at the University of Georgia. The girls look super fine in their sundresses and cowboy boots and bow ties are abound on the guys. Alumni flock to Athens to see the Dawgs play.

There is so much school spirit. The students get very involved and rowdy during sports. Athletes are mixed in with everyday interactions.

Student Involvement

Anything and everything is available, you just have to get out there. It is your own fault if you do not like the athletics and your not doing something correctly or anything at all.

Most Popular Sports

On the varsity level, the football and basketball teams have the largest presence on campus. All of the IM sports are also very popular. The gym dogs——the gymnastics team——frequently win the national championship and are also a big draw.

Most Overlooked Teams

Baseball, hockey, swimming, tennis, soccer, volleyball— basically everything besides football and basketball are overlooked. With the exception of gymnastics, most women’s teams don’t receive a lot of attention.

School Spirit

School spirit is strong at the University of Georgia. Alumni support, both financially and physically, at University events is overwhelming. Students and alumni join together for many University fundraisers and causes. Football games unite thousands of students and fans that might have nothing else in common but a love for the school and the Dawgs. The pursuit of excellence within the University is a challenge undertaken by students and alumni from all walks of life. Most people affiliated with UGA want it to remain great. Students and alumni are proud of their UGA education, and proud to be a part of a school with so much character. Students, faculty, and alumni are very involved in the affairs of the University’s administration, and the Red and Black newspaper keeps everyone informed as to what is going on. Dawgs fans have been through a lot, both good and bad, but they remain dedicated and unwavering. Loyalty is key to being a Dawg. The fans here are great, and easily some of the best in the nation. They are always supportive, always faithful, and definitely know how to have a good time.

Getting Tickets

Getting football tickets can be quite complicated. For season tickets, students pay online in the fall and pick them up a few days later. Football tickets are distributed based on credit hours. Hence, freshmen, sophomores, and even some graduate students will only get a split ticket package——that is, 3 or 4 tickets out of 7——for home games. There are dozens of scalpers on game days, and sometimes you can even score a free ticket after kick-off, when ticket prices and interest plummet.

Away games are determined by lottery and seniority. The most coveted away game is for Georgia-Florida. For away games, e-mails are sent out to announce who has been chosen to receive tickets. The SEC Championship game was done by lottery, as well.

Season football tickets cost around $45. Basketball season tickets are about $25. Tickets to any other event are under $5 per event——often free——and should not be a problem to get at the gate.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The trail at the intramural fields and the track on Milledge Avenue (it’s the only street without hills, and there’s a lot of Greek houses) are very scenic.
