Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is not a lot of diversity on UGA’s campus. Considering that the state population of Georgia is about 30 percent black, the fact that only five percent of UGA’s student population is African American is, perhaps, a reason for concern. A new program called the African American Male Initiative has been instituted to improve diversity on campus. With this program, black high school and middle school students will be targeted and guided by counselors and other educators on which school is best for them. Because nearby Atlanta has so many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), it has been hard for UGA to recruit African American students. There is a noteworthy number of Asian and Indian students on campus. Many TAs and professors are of Asian or Indian descent, as well. And even though the Hispanic population in Georgia is growing rapidly, the Hispanic student population at UGA has remained consistently under five percent over the years.

There is a lot of Old South spirit alive at UGA—many fraternities still fly the Confederate flag every now and again. Because UGA is so predominantly white, this is a fairly common theme. People are not usually racist or critical towards one’s race, but the undercurrent is still there. The good news is that the minority students and clubs on campus seem to be very involved and close-knit. In conclusion, a student’s social circle at UGA could be composed of all walks of life, but they should keep in mind that the path they’ll be treading on will ultimately lead through the Deep South.

A World of Cultures in One Town

There are mostly white students on campus with other races making up around 20% of the student body by my estimation. However, the school tries to include each of the races in every student's experience. For example, there are many African American Fraternities and Sororities as well as many clubs and diversity fairs to get the word out. There is an Indian Heritage club as well as a performance group that is all black that addresses the average life of a black person and performs only plays written by African Americans as opposed to those by other races. There are many Latin groups that educate others about Latin American Culture as well as groups that organize study abroad trips specifically to those countries. There are muslim, jewish, Buddhist, and any other religion that you can think of organizations represented on campus. Although I came from a predominately white suburban neighborhood, I feel like I know so much more about each culture because of what I learn in different classes as well as through cultural outreach programs.

Not Very Diverse

Don't get me wrong there are many people of many different ethnicities at the University of Georgia but I think this school claims to be a little more diverse than it actually is. Approximately 73% of my freshmen class is Caucasian. I guess this is a huge improvement over what it was like fifty years ago but like everywhere you will still find racist red necks here. The academics here are great as long as you are a minority student willing to put up with the occasional racist joke or clarify a common miss conception.

Better Than I Thought

The fact that we do live in Georgia means that there are many conservative Republican students here. But I was also surprised about how many different cultural and religious groups are actually at UGA

Facts

Gay Pride

Like most of the South outside of Atlanta and Miami, UGA’s campus is not the most accepting of gays and lesbians. Like anywhere, there are those students who are supportive of the gay community and those who are not. However, Athens does have a gay bar/club called Blur. The Tasty World venue hosts a monthly drag show, too. Furthermore, the University has an LGBT Resource Center that coordinates with the Health Center for student counseling, while also hosting events for inclusion and awareness. Overall, Athens, as a city, is a little more open-minded than the University campus itself.

Political Activity

There is a large following for the College Republicans, as well as for the Young Democrats. The downtown area is home to weekly protests on various topics like the living wage and foreign war. Every so often, outside of Tate, especially on game days, you may catch a vocal demonstrator carrying graphic pro-life signs with pictures of aborted fetuses or super-conservative posters with lots of expletives. All of these right-wingers may sometimes hide that Athens is a very liberal city, featuring a UGA NORML chapter and a large anarchist community. Athens overall is very political.

Economic Status

UGA has students from diverse economic backgrounds, but they seem to come from predominantly wealthy families. It seems like everyone you meet is from Atlanta and drives a luxury car. However, the HOPE scholarship has changed the composition of UGA for the better, allowing large numbers of middle- and lower-income students the opportunity to come here.

Most Common Religions

There are a lot of very active Christian groups at UGA. Baptist groups probably have the largest numbers, though. Catholics are the smallest Christian group, and there are a significant number of Jewish students here, as well. There is a Jewish student center, as well as predominantly Jewish sororities and fraternities which students can join. Most religious activity takes place off campus at churches or places of worship that cater to college-age people.

Minority Clubs on Campus

UGA has African American and Asian sororities and fraternities. UGA also offers minority students the opportunity to join the Abeneefoo Kuo Honor Society, Black Affairs Council, Hispanic Student Association, Indian Cultural Exchange, and Pamoja Dance Company.
