Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Alcohol is probably the most abused substance on campus. Drinking is definitely one of the most popular pastimes at UGA. Alcohol is pretty easy to get no matter what age you are, and the excitement of downtown just encourages more drinking. Adderall and other speed-based pharmaceuticals are extremely popular during finals and midterms. You’d be surprised at the number and type of students that pop pills for that last focused minute of cramming. Cocaine, Ecstasy, and magic mushrooms are also popular drugs among the Athens set.

Smoking pot is pretty common, but if someone is smoking in a dorm, he or she is usually caught pretty quickly. I have heard that Creswell Hall is one of the most common places people obtain and smoke pot, but I think this may be because High Times magazine once ranked the dorm as one of the top “weed” dorms in the country several years ago—quite a coincidence, being that the dorm was already nicknamed “The Big Green Monster.”

Drugs in Athens are expensive, and the mark-up for various substances is substantial—especially if the dealer thinks you’re “green” and knows you’re a freshman. For many students, consuming various drugs (semi)responsibly is a daily routine; hence, the drug scene is hardly noticeable. Ultimately, the ‘drug scene’ is an invisible, fringe one in Athens, unless you’re looking for them, in which case, there is a cornucopia.

Party College

Because of the proximity of the downtown athens scene and the university, drinking and drug use is a major problem especially on weekends although most of the viewable use is limited to the downtown area and geek houses.

Need More Caution.

It is easy to meet drug sellers in the downtown in Athens. Whenever I going out with my friends or just walking down a sidewalk at night, there are always people who are following and ask "any weed?" However, the reason I gave A minus for the University of Georgia's drug safety rate is only people usually do drugs purchase weeds from seller. Rather alcohol is bigger and more serious issue for the UGA. Also it really depends on who you hang out with.

Alcohol

Alcohol is rampant at UGA, especially underage drinking. Weed is popular too, but probably not as much. Some crazies do more things, but that's mostly on the fringes of the social scene.
