College Prowler Take
Alcohol is probably the most abused substance on campus. Drinking is definitely one of the most popular pastimes at UGA. Alcohol is pretty easy to get no matter what age you are, and the excitement of downtown just encourages more drinking. Adderall and other speed-based pharmaceuticals are extremely popular during finals and midterms. You’d be surprised at the number and type of students that pop pills for that last focused minute of cramming. Cocaine, Ecstasy, and magic mushrooms are also popular drugs among the Athens set. Smoking pot is pretty common, but if someone is smoking in a dorm, he or she is usually caught pretty quickly. I have heard that Creswell Hall is one of the most common places people obtain and smoke pot, but I think this may be because High Times magazine once ranked the dorm as one of the top “weed” dorms in the country several years ago—quite a coincidence, being that the dorm was already nicknamed “The Big Green Monster.” Drugs in Athens are expensive, and the mark-up for various substances is substantial—especially if the dealer thinks you’re “green” and knows you’re a freshman. For many students, consuming various drugs (semi)responsibly is a daily routine; hence, the drug scene is hardly noticeable. Ultimately, the ‘drug scene’ is an invisible, fringe one in Athens, unless you’re looking for them, in which case, there is a cornucopia.

Drugs are present at UGA. Obviously, alcohol is quite prevalent. I haven’t seen much else, though, aside from marijuana. Stuff is available, but if you choose to ‘say no,’ people will not look down on you. |

Drugs are pretty common here, and people get caught sometimes, but I wouldn’t say it’s a big problem or anything. It’s college—you have to expect that kind of stuff. |

I know kids that smoke pot and have done cocaine, and they obviously have buddies that do drugs with them, but I think alcohol is a much bigger problem than drugs at UGA. |

I know people that do drugs, but I would say alcohol is a much bigger problem than cocaine or pot. If you get caught with drugs, especially in the dorms, you obviously get into a lot of trouble, and the penalties for alcohol are not as bad. |

Drugs here seem pretty common, I guess. I don’t really hang out with many people that do drugs, but I would say it’s on par with any college as far as drug use. |
