Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Every night of the week, there is some Greek social or party going on, and the themes are really creative. If you have trouble meeting people and making friends on your own, you might want to consider rushing. In a Greek organization, you will meet literally hundreds of people, both males and females, and there is great camaraderie within the Greek community. Frat parties are very popular, and you don’t have to be Greek to get in, but people do get turned away for various reasons, and it is even rumored that some people have been turned away based on their racial background. The Greeks can tend to dominate social life on campus at times, and if you live in an all-female dorm, there really is no escaping the incessant sorority news and gossip. Some of the Greeks are very stuck up and snobby, and will not pay any attention to non-Greeks, but of course this does not apply to everyone.

I have heard all kinds of rush stories, ranging from the horrific to the ecstatic. The students who are most disappointed are the ones who come into the process with their hearts set on a specific sorority or fraternity. Fraternity competition is generally not quite as fierce as that of sororities. I have heard many stories where students with all the proper recommendations, and even legacies, are deferred from their top choices. It happens. Overall, if rushing is something you feel like you really want to do, there are tons of options, and you will probably find something you love. If you’re undecided about the whole thing, talk to someone who has already done it. If you go into it with a few options, you will have much less stress.

Great Way to Get Involved

Being apart of Greek life is a great way to get involved around campus, meet new people, and experience new things. Since Greek life is about being a philanthropist, it allows you to be aware of clubs on campus and help you give back to the community and those in need.

Great Greek Scene, but Doesn't Dominate

There's definitely a great Greek scene, but it doesn't dominate the school. About half of the students are involved in Greek life. It works for some people, but it's not for everyone. Either way you will make friends and find an organization you love.

Can't stand Greek life at UGA. They're mostly fake and you can't get away from them. All you ever hear about is who got alcohol poisoning at so-and-so's social. If that's what you're into though....you should love it.
