College Prowler Take
Every night of the week, there is some Greek social or party going on, and the themes are really creative. If you have trouble meeting people and making friends on your own, you might want to consider rushing. In a Greek organization, you will meet literally hundreds of people, both males and females, and there is great camaraderie within the Greek community. Frat parties are very popular, and you don’t have to be Greek to get in, but people do get turned away for various reasons, and it is even rumored that some people have been turned away based on their racial background. The Greeks can tend to dominate social life on campus at times, and if you live in an all-female dorm, there really is no escaping the incessant sorority news and gossip. Some of the Greeks are very stuck up and snobby, and will not pay any attention to non-Greeks, but of course this does not apply to everyone. I have heard all kinds of rush stories, ranging from the horrific to the ecstatic. The students who are most disappointed are the ones who come into the process with their hearts set on a specific sorority or fraternity. Fraternity competition is generally not quite as fierce as that of sororities. I have heard many stories where students with all the proper recommendations, and even legacies, are deferred from their top choices. It happens. Overall, if rushing is something you feel like you really want to do, there are tons of options, and you will probably find something you love. If you’re undecided about the whole thing, talk to someone who has already done it. If you go into it with a few options, you will have much less stress.

I think something like 30 percent...
I think something like 30 percent of the campus is involved in social sororities and fraternities. I am in a professional fraternity, and there are many of those that you can join, but none of the Greek organizations dominate the social scene. UGA is a place where you won’t ever feel pressured by the Greeks, but there is an adequate Greek scene if you decide you want to join. Either way, you won’t lack social opportunities. Trust me! |

I love being part of the Greek...
I love being part of the Greek community. I have met so many people who are now my best friends, and the socials are incredibly fun. I know girls who are snobby about it, but they make up a small percentage. Most everyone is really nice once you get to know them. |

I went to a couple of frat parties, and I thought they were kind of lame. The Greeks here are really enthusiastic, and it kind of gets on my nerves sometimes. |

I felt like the Greeks dominated...
I felt like the Greeks dominated campus when I was a freshman, but I don’t really feel like that now. I think it’s more that they are very visible, and by that, I mean they are involved in all kinds of events on campus, from student government to sports teams and intramurals. |

I have met nice Greeks, and not so nice Greeks. It just depends on who you’re with. When I was a freshman, it seemed like they dominated the social scene, but now, I don’t really feel that way. |
