Athens, the "Classic City," is the quintessential college town. Downtown offers amazing nightlife, with numerous clubs, bars, cafés, restaurants, and shops on every corner. Music is a cornerstone of downtown Athens, with plenty of opportunities for students to see local and nationally recognized bands. Every night, there are at least six concerts playing at various venues around town, whether they be indie rock at the 40 Watt, jam music at the Georgia Theatre, or metal at Caledonia Lounge. Athens also has a famed history of hosting super secret shows at underground music venues and house shows. A friend once said you couldn’t toss a stone in Athens without hitting a musician, and this is true—if you are looking to start a band, definitely come here. R.E.M., the B-52s, Widespread Panic, Of Montreal, MGMT, and Neutral Milk Hotel all got their start in Athens. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a town with a stronger music scene.
Students agree that bars are the place to be. They’re always packed from Thursday night to the wee hours of Sunday morning. Unlike some towns, Athens actually has enough bars to accommodate the number of partygoers living here. There are freshman bars that are a little less selective as far as fake IDs go, as well as sports bars, outdoor bars, and sophisticated, ritzy bars. Downtown is located within walking distance from the dorms, so walking to and from parties is not a problem, and no one has to drive. Taxis and student-sponsored organizations also provide transportation to and from various hotspots. Plus, if you get tired of being in a smaller town, Atlanta is about an hour away. Anything Athens doesn’t have, Atlanta definitely does.

Something for Everyone
The cuisine alone is to die for in Athens. There are so many different types of food and price ranges that will satisfy anyone. The range of things to do is astounding as well. There is classical theater as well as mid range to plays that seem to be done in back alleys on a variety of subjects and eras. The club scene is fantastic if that is what you are in to. There are the mainstream bars for those who just want to drink, and 18 and older club to cater to those students without a fake ID and the 40 watt club for those who just want to listen to their favorite indie band or Cine to see artistic documentaries and movies that most do not see in regular theaters. There are also many festivals for those that somehow get tired of all of the everyday attractions in Athens. There are international fairs, folk fairs, organic food fairs, and political fairs to feed the mind as well as the stomach. Who could disagree that Athens is amazing?

Location, Location, Location...
UGA is centered in the classic southern city of Athens. The music scene in this town filled with Victorian and Greek revival homes is incredible. During the day, there is a little bit of something for everyone's taste. At night, the bars along College Ave and downtown comes to life. The location is also convenient for day-trips. Lake Lanier is an hour north (NW) and Atlanta is an hour south (SW). The city's population skyrockets on Saturdays in the fall, as 90,000+ fans pour into Athens to tailgate and occasionally find a football game is going on at the same time.

As far as restaurants, Athens has everything from typical southern cuisine to international flavors and even several vegan eateries loved by many.
