Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Athens is a car-friendly and bike-friendly town. Downtown parking is limited, so carpooling is a good idea if you’re going in a group. Bikes are great for getting around quickly, and many major roads have bike lanes.
  • The bus is the main option for people choosing public transportation.
  • On campus, it’s sometimes faster just to walk rather than catch what is sure to be a crowded bus.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs $90.
  • AAA Airport Express offers a regularly scheduled shuttle service between Atlanta and Athens. The van can drop you off at various hotels, and costs $30 per person each way. AAA airport express also offers group rates. (404) 767-2000
  • Atlanta Arrangements has 10-passenger vans or minibuses available with seating for up to 22 people. This service costs $250-$350. (404) 443-5959
  • Daytime Transportation Inc. also offers transportation for groups of 10-15. (770) 939-2337
  • Odds are, your roommate will be from the greater Atlanta area, so you can always bum a ride with him or her if you need to get to the airport.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The UGA buses run efficiently and are a great way to get around UGA’s sprawling campus. Students who don’t have a parking permit can take the Athens City Transit buses to and from campus for free by scanning their UGA IDs. The buses usually require a long wait, and it’s just a bad situation for all students when it’s hot and crowded. Often, in the ten minutes before any given class starts, the buses become a very hot commodity--you may even get on a bus to only immediately hop off because there just isn’t enough space. If you don’t have a car, try to bum rides from your friends. The cabs here can be a little pricey, and even a bit shady, but if you need a ride home from someone who is slightly less buzzed than you, then our cabbies will do just fine.

Having Hartsfield airport an hour and a half away is convenient for out-of-staters and anyone going abroad or on spring break trips. Students routinely find departing flights to just about any destination from Atlanta. Getting to the airport is not really complicated. Every weekend there is someone going home to the Atlanta metro area, so it is super simple to hitch a ride when needed. Overall, UGA is so centrally located, and the downtown area so close, that it is easy to get by without your own set of wheels, at least for a few years.

Buses! Thumbs up!

In UGA, two types of public buses run. One is UGA bus and the other one is Athens Transportation. First of all, the UGA bus run by school and drivers are students! Currently there are five main lines; Orbit, East-West, Millege, Ag Hill, and North-South. Students mainly use Orbit and Ag Hill and usually there are 5 minutes gap between buses. It is really convinent to use buses in UGA and you will love it after all. For Athens Transit, it is run by Athens local government and you can use it whenever you go to off-campus area. 12 and 14 buses are famous and many people use them. You can go mall or any other area through Athens Transit! No need to worry about transportations if you intend to come UGA!

City and Campus

For a small town Athens has SO MANY BUSSES. They go around campus and around town. Busses are best around campus and then getting from campus to certain apartment complexes. The further you get away from campus busses will become less frequent, but since UGA is a big campus the busses help out a lot! The system is easy to figure out and works pretty well.
