The atmosphere at UIC is one that spells strictness. Every week, UIC police make several arrests on campus for things such as trespassing and disorderly conduct. While these arrests mostly involve people not affiliated with the University, on occasion, UIC students have been known to be amongst them. On an academic level, the University’s administration is very strict. Academic honesty is held in high regard, and instructors are expected to enforce it at all times. Even the behavior of students off University property is monitored. Recently, a subtle e-mail from the UIC chancellor brought attention to the behavior of students in off-campus housing in surrounding communities. The University had been receiving complaints about the behavior of its students, and the e-mail served as a reminder that the actions of students reflect upon the University.
On the other hand, campus housing has strict rules regarding visitation and resident behavior, but some of these are loosely enforced. For instance, resident assistants are generally pretty helpful, but many are lenient in enforcing housing policies regarding quiet hours, giving residents the freedom to raise the roof to whatever heights they wish. Alcohol policies are also loosely enforced, but to be safe, most students do their drinking off campus at local clubs and bars, thereby avoiding the scrutiny of campus police. However, visitation policies are strictly enforced, and guests are required to be signed in after 7 p.m. In the event that one is caught violating campus housing policies, one would be subject to the review of a council and disciplinary action may result. All in all, UIC is a pretty strict university, but improvements can still be made on the part of campus housing.
