Housing at college can be a nightmare. Luckily, the University offers many options for its students, which means that almost anyone can find a place to make them happy. Each dorm has its pros and cons, and several students have experienced the good and bad of each residence hall at some point. FAR and PAR are the only dorms that are close to the student parking lot. Lincoln Avenue and Busey-Evans Residence Halls are the women-only dorms, and students say they are also the cleanest and most aesthetically pleasing. The Six-Pack is a collection of six dorms beside one another. They are allegedly the wildest of the dorms, perhaps because they have so many freshmen, but they are great dorms to make friends in your first year. The drawbacks to campus housing are that some halls are too far from the Quad, have limited space, offer no parking, and very few have air-conditioning. However, they all offer dining halls (students say ISR is the best), laundry, and computer labs.

Private certified housing is another popular option among students, even though it may come at a slightly higher price. This housing has the best amenities and is an example of how U of I campus housing ranges from the bare basics to pretty darn nice, though many students say private dorms are much less social and diverse. Campus housing can shape your social and academic habits, so choose wisely, or make sure you're ready adjust to what you’re assigned to.

Fun but Not Too Many Options

It is fun living on campus because all your friends are pretty much walking distance away. After freshman year, I would recommend getting apartments with close friends because there is much more freedom. The social atmosphere is great, people are friendly and social, just make sure to really get to know a lot of people in the beginning of freshman year. The housing process is pretty simple after freshman year, you can choose exactly where you want to live, down to the room number.

Living in Chambana

I love living here. The campus is gorgeous and there's always something to do. Transportation is great too, everything's a bus ride and a short walk away! There are so many places to just sit and watch the world go by. It's really safe too, there have been some crime alerts, but nothing too serious.

I lived here my freshman year and overall, the dorm is very quiet and isolated but clean. The bathrooms are very well kept and though the dorms are small, there is functioning air conditioning and heat. The biggest con is that you don't really make many friends, especially since the architecture and environment doesn't foster those types of relationships. However, it is close to the quad so you can wake up five minutes before class and be on time.
