Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The drug scene at U of I is limited to acid and pot for causal users, and even then, usage of these drugs is generally not very popular or extreme. These drugs are available, though, as most students say they either know of someone who has gotten drugs or someone who supplies drugs. Instead, alcohol is the substance of choice, and many students do abuse it. It is not uncommon to find students who drink four or five times a week. As a consequence, most substance abuse arrests are related to alcohol and range from fights to underage drinking to driving while under the influence. Occurences of violence, both physical and sexual, that are caused by alcohol are probably some of the larger problems caused by substance abuse on this campus. U of I tries to educate its students on these dangers, and it even requires all freshmen to take a class on rape drugs and ways to stay safe while around alcohol.

Of course, no matter how many seminars U of I sponsors, there will always be some students who have a problem with control and safety. The best thing you can do is avoid people and places that are dangerous and far from campus. Even if you and your friends head out for what you intend to be an innocent night on the town, you never know what can go on at a party once you get there. Champaign tends to be a harder scene, with more drugs present and available, especially in the seedier part of town. Practice self-control and safety around alcohol, and the rest should not be a problem.

It's Everywhere

There are drugs available at any fraternity you go to and to get into the bars is 19 so there are underage people getting drinks at bars every night. Also a lot of liquor stores don't card people buying drinks.

I Don't Really Know

I don't really know much about drinking and drugs, but there was an incident when police came to all-female dorm to arrest a student on my floor. My roommate said that she got caught doing pot, but I don't really see people doing drugs.

Drinking Is More Popular

Drinking is definitely more popular than drugs. There are definitely people who do drugs on campus but there is no pressure to try it. I have never even seen it around, just heard about who does and does not do it.
