Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

U of I is always looking for better ways to protect its students. There are blue emergency phones scattered all over campus, and security officers are always present, whether they are patrolling the bars at night, or monitoring speed limits in the daytime. SafeRides are also a valuable resource. They operate from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will drive University students to their dorm or apartment at no charge. So whether you are out late at the library or too drunk to drive, you can always depend on SafeRides to get you home. In addition, all the residence halls require either an outside key or an I-card after dark, so non-students can't slip in. Students know that the University is serious about their well-being, and they appreciate the security of the campus.

Emergency phones and SafeRides can only go so far, though. That is why the University tries to educate its students on the dangers that exist and the precautions that they should take. Whether it is a sign in the library reminding you not to leave your bag alone, or a workshop educating people on the dangers of rape drugs, U of I wants everyone to be in the know. Mass e-mails are sent out in case of a campus emergency, as well as text messages to students registered for the emergency notification system. Students are notified of any increases in crime or assaults so that they can be especially careful when they travel the campus at those times. All the resources are there, and if you choose to utilize them, your time at U of I should be very safe.

Overall Safe

The campus may not be in the safest location, but there are always cops around. When walking at night there is safe walks and safe rides. Whenever there is any danger there are email alerts and text alerts.

The School Works Hard to Keep Campus Safe

There are many crime alerts you will receive through text and email throughout the year, but the school works hard to keep it safe. Like I said, we get immediate alerts to be careful and on the lookout if there is even a suspicion of a crime. The campus bus system, MTD, even provides SafeRides and SafeWalks, which you can call to give you a ride from where you are to where you live or have two people escort you to your place so you don't walk home alone.

Very Safe

As long as you're smart about what you're doing and where you're going, you'll be fine. Don't be oblivious to your surroundings, make sure you take safety precautions, i.e. pepper spray, whistles, walking with someone.

Did You Know? The Dial-A-Nurse hotline is open all day, every day. You can call this number for assistance with a simple cold or even for suspected alcohol poisoning. The people who work there are comforting and give great advice, just what you need when you have a health problem and the clinic is closed.
