Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While dining in the residence halls can be a problem, off-campus dining is guaranteed to make you gain at least some of that Freshman 15. There are restaurants all over Green Street, from predictable spots like Noodles & Co. and Potbelly, to the out of the ordinary like Zorba’s or Bombay Grill. There is Mexican, Greek, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, seafood, and fine dining—most within a few miles of campus. However, some of the chains and high-end restaurants are not located near campus, which can be problem. If you have a yearning for Red Lobster, you will have to choose between an extensive bus ride or carpool.

Most students, especially freshmen, find it easier to stick to the options near campus. And of course, there is always pizza to rely on. On weekends, Gumby’s delivers until 3 a.m.—a fact everyone in college takes advantage of once in a while. Every Tuesday night, Gumby’s has a buy one get one free Pokey Sticks sale that is a must. Nevertheless, eating healthy can be a problem. There are places like Red Herring and Strawberry Fields that cater to vegetarians and those on a healthy diet, but for the most part, off-campus dining is heavy in grease and calories. Another problem is the distance to the grocery stores. If you live in the residence halls but still want to stock up on food and drinks, you are going to have to either take the bus or walk. The best grocery store, Mejier’s, is nowhere near Green Street, so if you want more than Hostess and Doritos, you are going to have to forget County Market and take a long bus ride.

Green Street

Green Street is busy and packed with students and restaurants. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from--Asian, Mexican, Indian, Italian, vegan, etc. The cost is a little more expensive that restaurants back at home, but it is reasonable. There are buses that will take you to restaurants somewhat off-campus and restaurants way off-campus.
