Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Finding a parking spot on campus is pretty much impossible. If you have a yearning to drive to class—and when it is 19 degrees outside, who can blame you? You will find yourself circling the streets, chasing after anyone who looks like they might be leaving their parking spot. If you have to leave your car for more than a couple of hours, you might as well just take the bus or walk, unless you are rich and you want to spend $5 on parking a day. If you have just a quick errand or one class, allot yourself some searching time. Look out for the parking police who take their job very seriously. You would think they are on a mission to save the free world or something, with the zeal they have for their job. If you are a student living in the dorms, you should pretty much give up on having your car with you. The student parking lots are blocks away from most of the dorms, although people who live in FAR/PAR are conveniently close to F23. If you are living in private housing or an apartment, finding a permanent space won’t be a problem, although it may be costly. U of I really needs to build more student lots, and, someday, maybe they will use all the money they make from tickets to do so, but for right now, this campus is a parking nightmare.

No Need

Although the campus is large, you won't need to drive anywhere. The buses work fine for off-campus needs. On campus, most places you need to be will only be 15 minutes away from your living quarters.

Okay

The main parking lot is really far from most of campus, but I love having my car on campus. Don't bother driving to class though. It's also expensive if you're not paying for an apartment.

Parking at UIUC

There are plenty of meter-parking places on the streets. However, parking enforcement is strict and they are quick to give out tickets for violations. There are also garages where you can park, but you have to pay for a permit. However, most students walk, bike, or ride the bus to get around campus, so they don't even have to worry about parking.

Getting a Parking Permit

Students can get a permit pretty easily. Unfortunately, only two lots are open for student use, F23 and E14, both of which are a good walk from campus and the dorms. To get a permit, all you have to do is call the office and reserve one. When you pick it up, you need your license plate number, registration, driver’s license, and payment.
