Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The weather in Illinois is a consistent source of conversation and complaints. Not only is it freezing cold in winter and hellishly hot in summer, it is completely unpredictable in between. You may leave the house in a sweatshirt and coat in February, only to find that it is 60 degrees outside. Or maybe you leave the house in April in a tank top, only to be surprised by a sudden snowfall. Basically, if you’re not from the area or are not familiar with Midwest weather, you are definitely in for a few surprises.

The only thing you can do is be prepared. It is definitely suggested that you bring an umbrella and snow gear, because Illinois is also home to a lot of snow and rain. You will experience some of the most bitterly windy and cold days here imaginable, where walking out the door for class is like being slapped in the face. Nothing sucks more than walking to class in three inches of snow and ice, but it is a reality that Illinois students have to face, so be warned. If you are not going to be able to make yourself go to class if it is below 32 degrees, then you might want to rethink coming to school here.

Windy

I'm from the Chicago area, so I thought I was used to wind, but here the wind is crazy. There are days when everyone is walking to class sideways because the wind is pushing them. It is pretty funny. I've only gone there one year and the winter weather was surprisingly great, but I have heard about how bad the snow can get in the winter.

Don't Come Here for the Weather

Champaign has cold winters and hot, humid summers. When it rains, the drainage systems are poor and the streets fill with water. If you have an uncovered parking spot, you can almost expect to be stuck in your spot for days at a time after bad snowstorms. There are about three weeks each semester though when the weather is nice and people hang out and play frisbee and slackline on the Quad.

Weather

It sucks when it rains because getting your shoes or pants wet is nearly unavoidable. Most girls invest in rain boots but all the sorority girls look the same when it rains! Classes never really get canceled and the buses usually get you close enough to class to avoid major weather.
