College Prowler Take

Athletics at U of I are big, and people take sports very seriously. Whether they are spectators or participants in the game, nearly everyone on campus is interested in the outcome of the varsity sports teams. As far as basketball and football are concerned, you’ll find more students buzzing over those games than you will any other sport on campus. But this is a Division I school, so that’s expected. Intramural and club sports are also really big on campus, and they are a great way to meet people and have fun. The underwater hockey team, especially, is legendary for its crazy games. Even if you are not the best athlete you can surely find some sport that interests you through intramurals and clubs.

The gyms and playing fields are also big on campus, and some people say that they consider ARC one of their favorite hangouts. Of course, the real event here is football. People come to the games religiously, rain or snow. The Block I section is for the most dedicated fans. There, students dress in all orange and blue and hold signs to cheer on their team. The Illinettes also turn out for all the home games, and so it’s like a midday party. Even people who aren't that interested in football come out for the party atmosphere and school spirit. If you’re not a sports fan when you come to U of I, don’t be surprised if you graduate with a foam finger on your hand.

University of Illinois is a Division I Big Ten contender in every sport. If nothing else, the weekend is always filled with sporting events to watch—football and basketball particularly, but it extends to every sport.

From intramural broomball on the ice to dodgeball, there isn’t really a whole lot missing. Flag football under the lights in the fall is when all the high school all-stars get to relive their past glories (trust me, I know from experience here). There is something for everyone, whether you want to watch or play, we have a lot of flat land on which to do either.

Varsity sports are a force to be reckoned with here. It seems that everyone gets real excited about one sport or another. There’ll be talk such as, ‘Man, did you see the girls’ volleyball last night,’ or ‘I didn’t know our wrestling team was seventh in the nation.’

Illinois consistently puts eight to ten athletes in the pros every year. Former Illinis Jameel Cook, Simeon Rice, and Ken Dilger won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers. 2003 saw cornerback Eugene Wilson picked 35th overall, and in 2002 Frank Williams was a first round pick for the New York Knicks. The tennis team won the national title in 2003 as well.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Athletics and Recreation Center (ARC) - ARC is the main gym on campus and one of the largest campus recreation centers in the country. It is home to four different gyms as well as a variety of sports fields. There are tennis courts, squash courts, racquetball courts, volleyball courts, and a free weight room. It also has two pools, a sauna, an indoor running track, and a climbing wall, as well as several multi-purpose rooms for group fitness classes such as hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, and cycling. This is a favorite hangout of many students, which unfortunately means it can get busy.
  • Campus Recreation Center-East (CRCE) - CRCE is a smaller gym, located right next door to Allen Hall and Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls, which is very convenient for its residents. Unfortunately, this also means that it is very busy, and it is rarely empty no matter what the time. Like ARC, CRCE has several multi-purpose rooms for exercise classes.
  • Playing Fields - All of the playing fields are well-kept and lit for playing at night.

Getting Tickets

It is usually easy to get tickets for sporting events, as long as it is not a big game. There is generally a good turnout, especially at the football and basketball games. Money is not an issue either, as you can get a good price with your student ID.

Most Popular Sports

There is a lot of interest in sports, especially football and basketball. The fate of these two teams is taken personally by students and community residents alike, and everyone goes to the games to support them and cheer them on, regardless of the weather.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s tennis team has done very well in the past, however, the women tend to get overshadowed by the men’s tennis team.
