College Prowler Take
The drug scene at U of I is limited to acid and pot for causal users, and even then, usage of these drugs is generally not very popular or extreme. These drugs are available, though, as most students say they either know of someone who has gotten drugs or someone who supplies drugs. Instead, alcohol is the substance of choice, and many students do abuse it. It is not uncommon to find students who drink four or five times a week. As a consequence, most substance abuse arrests are related to alcohol and range from fights to underage drinking to driving while under the influence. Occurences of violence, both physical and sexual, that are caused by alcohol are probably some of the larger problems caused by substance abuse on this campus. U of I tries to educate its students on these dangers, and it even requires all freshmen to take a class on rape drugs and ways to stay safe while around alcohol. Of course, no matter how many seminars U of I sponsors, there will always be some students who have a problem with control and safety. The best thing you can do is avoid people and places that are dangerous and far from campus. Even if you and your friends head out for what you intend to be an innocent night on the town, you never know what can go on at a party once you get there. Champaign tends to be a harder scene, with more drugs present and available, especially in the seedier part of town. Practice self-control and safety around alcohol, and the rest should not be a problem.

Well, I have been offered pot and acid. I have heard rumors of coke, and I know some people take cold and pain medicine to get more of a buzz when drinking. But most people just stick to beer. Hell, it’s cheaper. |

Well, when I was living in the dorms, there were some people caught smoking marijuana, and they were dealt with by residence hall authorities. I am not really sure what the punishment was. |

Cocaine is starting to make a small resurgence as a high-class party drug, but people are becoming aware of how dangerous it is. The ecstasy craze is dying from what it was a couple of years ago. The number one experimental drug right now is mushrooms. The second most popular drug to marijuana is nitrous . . . go figure. |
