College Prowler Take
U of I’s campus has many places to keep students busy with daytime and evening activities. During the day at the Illini Union, students lounge between classes and eat in the basement food court, with a variety of food from Chinese to McDonald’s to Blimpie. The student bank and computer lab are here too, which is convenient for students who want to get work done between classes. In the Union’s basement the bowling alleys and the billiards area are student favorites. For students who don’t want to spend their nights at a bar, the Union is definitely a viable alternative. The gyms also attract many students; they’re up to par for Division I Big Ten athletes. Coffeehouses are always popular as well, especially the ones next to campus. Most offer wireless hookups, which makes them a great place for students to work and relax. Beyond the gyms and arcade, the University’s greatest features are its beautiful buildings and grounds. From Foellinger Auditorium to the English Building, the buildings are aestheticially pleasing and interesting. Lined by striking brick buildings on all sides, the Main Quad maintains a classic feel with its tree-lined walkways and crisscrossed sidewalks, and the South Quad and Engineering Quad make the campus easily walkable. Students at U of I enjoy all the facilities the University has to offer, both in and out of doors.

The Illini Union is one of the most popular places because it is located on the Quad, the center of the campus and surrounded by residence and educational halls. I love it because it has everything. If I am hungry, I can choose between a Big Mac or orange chicken. If I am thirsty and need to stay up for the night, I can sip a café latte while studying in the Courtyard Café. |

Everything on campus is pretty much the best there is available. Some of our alumni include Roger Ebert and Hugh Hefner, so we get a lot of financial support. As a matter of fact, after winter break of the 2001–2002 school year during which our football team competed in the Nokia Sugar Bowl, we had brand new public buses on campus. |

FactsWhat To Do on Campus
The Quad is a hot spot on campus, especially in the warmer months. There is always a demonstration, charity event, or celebration taking place—or at the very least, a game of Frisbee. The shops on Green Street range from second-hand clothing stores to tattoo parlors. If this isn’t your style, you can stop by IMPE (Intramural-Physical Education building) or Wimpe (nickname for Campus Recreations Center-East, or CRCE) for a workout or a swim. Krannert also stages plays regularly, ranging from classics like Hamlet to comedies like Once Upon A Mattress. Poetry and prose readings happen everywhere on campus, from Espresso Royale to the top floor of the school bookstore. Of course, the basement of the Union is the real social scene, equipped with a bowling alley, arcade, billiards, and snacks; it is a good place to waste a few hours.
Favorite Things To Do
The gyms are popular facilities and a good way to burn a few hours and calories. The coffeehouses around campus are also busy: some people drop by for a cup of coffee, others to chill with a friend, and some find it a good place to study. The Union is also a student favorite, as it offers good food, nice couches, a computer lab, a game room, and a small shop where you can buy everything from envelopes to chips. If the weather is nice, the Quad is also a comfortable hangout, and people sleep, study, and just generally relax in the grass.
