College Prowler Take
U of I fits the bill for a Big 10 school in terms of its guys and girls. It is so huge that any attempt to describe a given “type” would be a generalization that obscures more than it reveals. The campus offers you many chances to meet intelligent, attractive men and women, though the brightest engineering minds have the reputation of lacking dating skills. That said, you are sure to meet many highly intelligent and socially competent engineers (some also highly attractive) in your classes—as well as liberal arts, art, and business majors who fit that description. There are also many interesting and cute international students, especially in the graduate programs. Typical going-out wear for a guy includes a button-down long-sleeve shirt with jeans, while girls wear jeans and heels—some wear miniskirts, if the weather allows—with sexy tops. Even in the dead of winter, you will see some girls in nothing but a short dress and heels. As far as looks, most people find that there is no shortage of attractive girls, and certainly no shortage of those who are eager to flaunt it.

Honestly, you can really only find hot girls in the sororities. You can always tell when there is some sorority recruitment thing going on because the bars turn into Jurassic Park.

Girls here are too obsessed with getting a guy. It is so 1950s. They all get dolled up for class and run around in tube tops in the winter. No wonder McKinley is always running out of free condoms. |

There's a little bit of everything...
There's a little bit of everything here, but there are a ton of attractive people. Since it is such a big campus, anything and everything you are looking for in the opposite sex (or same sex) can easily be found. Probably around 60% of our campus is from Chicago or the Chicago suburbs. The typical student is upper-middle class, lives with two parental figures, and has a pet (probably a dog). Students here love to have a good time (the legal bar age is 19), but they know how to work hard and play hard. One of my favorite sayings about the U of I is "U of I: Where our Wednesdays are better than your weekends."

FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - McKinley Health Center offers birth control services for women who take a pelvic exam or have taken one with their previous doctor. The charge for most birth control pills is included in the health fee, which makes birth control very inexpensive and accessible for everyone. Free condoms are also handed out at McKinley and other locations.
Social Scene
Generally, U of I students are very social and outgoing. It may be hard for shy students to stay afloat freshman year in such an overwhelming social atmosphere, in which friend groups do not automatically conform to residence hall floors or academic departments; dorms, classes, and student organizations are huge, so students have endless opportunities to make friends, but it is important to be outgoing and proactive. It is common for freshmen to stick with high school friends in the early weeks, making it even more difficult for some to make new friends when arriving to campus. But students are generally very interested in meeting new people, since the campus provides so many opportunities to do so.
Hookups or Relationships?
Hookups are prevalent on campus, but relationships are also common. However, relationships are generally more relaxed and less serious, as everyone here wants to date around as much as possible. Many people come to U of I with boyfriends or girlfriends at home or elsewhere.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
There are places to meet people all over campus. It is not unusual to meet people in class, as there are always topics for conversation and chances to meet up and "study." If class does not sound very romantic to you, there are people hanging out on the Quad or in the Union. These places are busy, and everyone is generally in a good mood and looking to hang out. Even though all of these locations are great for meeting people, it seems that bars and frat parties are usually where the action happens. On the weekends, nearly every bar on campus is packed with eager singles. To ensure that people actually meet others when they are sober, U of I hosts many events for freshmen students like First Night. At these events, all of the freshmen get together for activities at the Union or in their residence halls, which always leads to new friendships and relationships. If all else fails, you can always stake out an all-girls dorm cafeteria or vice versa.
Dress Code
Students here do not interest themselves too much in high fashion, at least not for everyday wear. Wearing a cute dress and heels is likely to draw more confused looks than praise. Visitors should expect to see a lot of jeans, sweatshirts, and U of I gear. The sense of anonymity on such a huge campus gives groggy students license to throw on outfits in the dark and run to class; there is little risk of running into your crush on the Quad. That said, every campus has its hipsters, and U of I is no exception. Although the “hipster” aesthetic here is often interpreted differently than in, say, New York City. You will see your share of bearded, plaid-shirt-wearing men and a lot of vintage boots and wool scarves. There are thrift stores in downtown Champaign, so have fun with fashion!
