College Prowler Take

U of I is always looking for better ways to protect its students. There are blue emergency phones scattered all over campus, and security officers are always present, whether they are patrolling the bars at night, or monitoring speed limits in the daytime. SafeRides are also a valuable resource. They operate from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will drive University students to their dorm or apartment at no charge. So whether you are out late at the library or too drunk to drive, you can always depend on SafeRides to get you home. In addition, all the residence halls require either an outside key or an I-card after dark, so non-students can't slip in. Students know that the University is serious about their well-being, and they appreciate the security of the campus.

Emergency phones and SafeRides can only go so far, though. That is why the University tries to educate its students on the dangers that exist and the precautions that they should take. Whether it is a sign in the library reminding you not to leave your bag alone, or a workshop educating people on the dangers of rape drugs, U of I wants everyone to be in the know. Mass e-mails are sent out in case of a campus emergency, as well as text messages to students registered for the emergency notification system. Students are notified of any increases in crime or assaults so that they can be especially careful when they travel the campus at those times. All the resources are there, and if you choose to utilize them, your time at U of I should be very safe.

If one follows the advice from the safety classes the University requires every new student to take, such as never walking at night alone or always making sure one knows where a drink came from, most problems can be avoided.

Though some people are worried about security on campus, the Quad and main campus grounds are really quite safe. Plus, there are groups of campus security who walk the Quad and campus to keep things safe. There are also several emergency booths if anything should happen.

Security and safety is only as a big of an issue as one makes it on campus. If one takes careful steps to avoid potentially dangerous situations, security will not be an issue.
