College Prowler Take
All sports have a following around the UI campus, but none as big as football. The wrestling program is known as one of the best in the nation. In fact, UI attendance records have been set at wrestling meets in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The men’s basketball team also plays in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but student support is dwindling after several disappointing seasons. Intramurals are quite extensive at UI. There are dozens of sports offered, so there’s generally something available for everyone. Most IM sports have two leagues: a competitive league and a more recreational one. Anyone of any skill level can get involved in intramurals, and many use them to fill the void left by high school athletics. Overall, athletic programs are the center of non-academic life at UI. Sports are always chatted about amongst friends, and it is rare that you’ll go to a house party or a bar without hearing somebody talk about an Iowa team. Hawkeye teams are rarely at the bottom of the standings, and when they are, it’s never for long. With no professional sports teams within any reasonable distance, UI not only provides sports entertainment for the student body, but for the entire state, as well.

Athletics on campus are a great experience. Football games have been my favorite so far, as they’re very exciting and fun-filled. Tailgating before games is an experience in itself, and the actual games have always been great. Having a fairly good team this year made it even better—we never lost at home. I’ve also enjoyed basketball games; our team was decent this year and had some great games. I’ve also been involved in intramural volleyball and basketball. In each sport, there have been referees and scorekeepers for all games, making it a lot more fun to play. Both have been great experiences. |

Football is absolutely huge, as is wrestling. Men’s basketball has diminished in fan support, however. |

Depending on the sport, varsity sports are big. Football weekends are huge on campus. People from all over the state come every year. Hawkeye fans bleed black and gold. There are some true die-hard fans. |

I played on intramural indoor volleyball, sand volleyball, and basketball teams. I loved them all! They allowed me to get some of my competitiveness out. Also, one thing I missed about high school was the chance to work with a team for a championship. Intramurals give me the opportunity to regain my love for sports. |

Tickets for men’s basketball are impossible to get unless you order online ahead of time. IM sports are fun, though. I played soccer once, and it was really fun, although my team was really bad. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Fitness East - Fitness East is the gym on the east side of the campus. It has weight and aerobic machines, as well as a small selection of free weights. Fitness East is even smaller than the Field House, but it was rennovated in 2002.
- The Field House - The Field House is the main recreation center on campus. It includes an indoor track, multiple basketball courts, rock-climbing walls, and a swimming pool. The only problem is that the building is quite small and old. The workout area provides free-weights, aerobic machines, and machine weights.

Getting Tickets
The best way to get tickets is through the University box-office. They send out e-mails when season tickets go on sale for football and basketball. They also have single game tickets available for students. The price of a ticket is not too steep—right in line with most major colleges—but your best bet is to buy season tickets.
Most Popular Sports
The most popular sport on campus is, by far, football. Basketball is also very popular around campus. The students reside in the Hawks Nest of Caver-Hawkeye Arena to cheer on the Hawkeyes. Wrestling also has a strong following at UI—some would even call UI the Mecca of collegiate wrestling.
Most Overlooked Teams
Women’s basketball—lately they have been dominating!
Best Place to Take a Walk
Anywhere around campus, especially around the river. Downtown is another good spot to provide a break from the monotony of running. Iowa City also offers several nature trails, but they are a good distance from the heart of campus.
