Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University is relatively strict in seeking out students who break the law or University policies. There is a zero-tolerance policy on illegal substances at all University events and in all buildings, including residence halls. Oftentimes, UI will give students a second chance, but if they mess up again, the University comes down with an iron fist. Some students don’t agree with the cops being able to enter the bars to card people because the cops who enter often cause patrons to scatter, which  puts a damper on the rest of the night. If you’re acting like a moron in one of the bars, you’re probably going to get busted sooner or later. The basic rule of thumb is that if you deserve it, you’re going to get it.

Sometimes, the campus can seem very strict, but at others, it can seem very lax. Although police can enter bars to bust people, if you’re drunkenly stumbling home quietly, the cops will usually let you go. If you’re in your residence hall, it is up to your RA to report if you are being a problem. Some RAs are easygoing, while others have no tolerance for drunken shenanigans. If your RA does report you for breaking the rules, expect a big punishment—possibly even being kicked out of your room for the rest of the year. Rules are a serious business at UI. As long as you use common sense, you should be okay, but if you’re doing something illegal and get caught, consequences are serious.

Stick to the Rules

Rules and Regulations are followed to the letter as set by precedent and original writing. That being said, many officials understand when safety is the bigger issue and address the safety and well-being of all students over punishment. I've never heard or seen abuse of power or unfair punishment and I have in fact witnessed a reversal of judgement when counteracting evidence was provided.

Not Too Severe

The RA's in the dorms are pretty lax, they will definitely overlook certain things if you are being respectable with alcohol. If you are being an idiot, obviously they will write you up. The police are the same way. If you are being smart and respecting people around you and them they will usually let you off with a warning or just leave you alone completely. If you are being rude they WILL write you up. Just doing their jobs though - I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to put up with rude little brats 24/7 either.

Just Be Smart

When it comes to the downtown area on a weekend, it's not too hard to get a public intox if you're not being smart. It's a large scene, though, so as long as you're not being too sloppy or obnoxious you'll be fine. Speaking of fine -- it's not a good idea to drink in the dorms. I've known several people who have gotten pretty large fines for it.
