Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Bring your own computer! By bringing one, students are able to work whenever they need to without fretting about the labs being full. During peak times of the year, the labs can become crowded, and the best way to work without stress or noise is to have a computer in your room. Every room in the residence halls is equipped with high-speed Internet access for student use. The University also does a fine job in providing computers and software for students to use—there are different operating systems in the computer labs, and in certain areas, computers are loaned out to students, such as laptops in the main library. By keeping their software and hardware up-to-date, UI has enabled teachers to bring technology into the classroom and to offer more interactive homework.

The only problem is that if you don’t know where the labs are located, they can be hard to find—but there is a map available of all of the labs on the University’s website. The labs have top-of-the-line PCs and Macs and are fairly convenient for stopping in between classes. The charge to print in these labs is reasonable, as long as you don’t have to print a 100-page document. ICON—Iowa Classrooms Online—is an amazing program that all teachers use to post assignments and grades. You can find copies of course materials and lectures and use discussion boards for communicating with teachers and other students. Grades are also posted online, which both increases convenience and saves embarrassment if you have to look at a poor exam grade.

Computers

There is no shortage of available computers on campus. The only problem is with the sign on speed. The computer labs can take forever to sign you in. The wireless can be pretty slow at times.

Computers, Etc.

There are plenty of computer labs avaliable. The wireless internet is spotty sometimes in the dorms, but each room has an ethernet port which works very well. There are also print stations located all over for easy access.

Computers at Iowa

The computer labs at Iowa are very well maintained, but far away and often full. They offer a remote desktop application though, so you can use your own computer as if it were a college computer, from your own room.

Did You Know?

The computers used in the Information Technology Centers (ITC) are top of the line and very dependable. There are labs in many different locations around campus, providing quick and easy access to students. In each lab, there is a specialist to help students with any questions they might have.

Most classes have a section on ICON, an interactive learning community that allows professors and TAs to post assignments and messages to their classes. It also allow students to check their grades and keep up-to-date on the reading for class. Many teachers will also post lecture outlines for students to print, making lectures easier to follow.
