Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Alcohol can be quite prevalent on weekend nights—sometimes it seems like the only thing to do at UI is drink. However, this is just not true. Most students prefer a drink on the weekends, but only some students drink enough to be noticeably drunk. Cops will often enter a house party or bar to look for underage drinkers, and tickets run $100 for a first offense. Like most other college campuses, there are a few students who choose to use illegal drugs. Some students say they are prevalent around campus, while others say they haven’t seen them at all, so it all depends on what kind of crowd you hang out with. While UI does a good job enforcing the law, drugs do exist. Overall, it’s something you’ll probably only encounter if you try to seek it out.

The most prevalent drugs on campus are marijuana and crystal meth. It is not uncommon to see kids smoking in their rooms or secretly at a party. However, even if you notice this going on, there is little to no peer pressure to join. If you are caught with an illegal substance, the city and the University do not tolerate it, and will give out the harshest punishments possible—even to first-time offenders.

Not a Problem

I don't personality think that drug use at The University of Iowa is a big problem. Drinking is a much more popular activity, not that I would describe that as a bad thing.

Don't Know a Ton

I don't really participate in this area of Iowa so I wouldn't know much but I do know that even though many of my friends smoke, I never feel pressured to take part
