College Prowler Take
Many of UI’s buildings add to the flavor of the community. Each building on campus has something unique about its design relating back to the state of Iowa, such as the Boyd Law Building, which looks like a corn silo, or walkways that look like giant ears of corn. Most of the buildings on campus offer more than just classroom space—many of the facilities include a lounge and/or a small cafeteria. One of the best features on campus is the Pentacrest, which contains four different education and administrative buildings, and houses the old capitol building from back when the state capitol used to reside in Iowa City. In a freak accident during renovations some years ago, the gold dome of the building caught on fire, but has since been restored. Students enjoy the old capitol not only for its history, but because it’s a quiet place to study. UI has a bad habit with its facilities, and this is starting to catch up with them. For example, the University will build a state-of-the-art facility, and over time, as renovations are needed, it will ignore them until the last possible moment. Then, it will knock down the old building and replace it with something new and state-of-the-art, which has become a problem in recent years because of significant budget cuts. The quality of the facilities largely depends on what your major is and where most of your classes are located. Although UI will claim “tradition” in many of its buildings, the reality is that they’re old and need to be improved.

I'm a journalism major, and the building is one of the nicest buildings on campus. But, if you're a poli sci or mathematics major, you'll be mostly in the older buildings, which have shady heating and air conditioning.

The facilities here at Iowa are awesome. There are a dozen different libraries to study at, and during finals week, they are open 24 hours. The student union (IMU) is my favorite place on campus to hang out. It has a coffeehouse, the University bookstore, computer labs, lots of food, and a study area.

Athletic facilities are...
Athletic facilities are great—they’re big and really, really nice. It’s hard to get a basketball court on some nights, but other than that, everything is pretty open. It’s all pretty new, and they keep it updated. Computers are good—not the top of the line, but better than any other school I have been to. The student center is really nice. Be sure not to step on the Zodiac when you walk in, though—if you do, they say you’ll fail your next test! |

Everything is always made for your convenience, which is nice on such a big campus. Our student center is really cool, and they do a lot to get kids involved. During finals week, they had masseuses come in and give free massages, which was very fun. |

I think that all of the buildings that I’ve been in are, for the most part, very nice and well kept. Even the older buildings, such as the chemistry building, have the newest technology in each classroom, such as a computer, projection screen, etc. The only exceptions are some of the large lecture halls. It is easy to tell that some of these are very old because of the poor temperature regulation, creaky old seats, and graffiti all over the writing platforms on each seat. |

Favorite Things To Do
There are a lot of fun things to do on campus, but it sometimes takes some hunting to find. Students can workout or play basketball or volleyball at the Field House. They can also workout at Fitness East and the fitness centers in Currier, Mayflower, and Hillcrest. If athletics don’t sound interesting, then Hancher Auditorium has many plays, musicals, and concerts year-round. If you’re just looking for a place to hang out with your friends, then dorm lounges and the IMU are great. When the weather is nice, students love hanging out on the grass in the Pentacrest or playing Frisbee in Hubbard Park.
UI seems to be its own little city inside of a college campus. Students can do anything from working out, to grabbing some food, to seeing a movie; that is, after they finish their studying, of course.
