Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Iowa City is a relatively safe town and a generally positive atmosphere for students and townies alike. More often than not, the crime that does occur is small and often results from students being careless or drunk. UI does a great job of making students feel safe—on weekend nights, the UI police are always a visible presence. The University also has set up a number of emergency phones around campus so students can call if they ever have a problem. Student Health Services educates students on the dangers of unsafe sex, poor diet, substance abuse, and stress. This helps keep both personal safety and security up around campus.

There have been a few incidents to raise concern around the area, but these should not deter anybody from spending time in Iowa City. In recent years the number of sexual crimes has increased, and both the city and the UI are addressing this problem. Overall, the University and Iowa City do a good job in protecting students and trying to stop any crimes before they occur.

I Feel Totally Safe

Whenever I am walking around Iowa's campus I never feel unsafe. There are blue emergency poles wherever you go and that makes me feel secure. Also for us girls there is a thing called night ride. You call them and they will pick you up at any university building and take you to wherever you want to go. It is run by the university's police and it is very handy.

Relatively Safe

I've never felt threatened on Iowa's campus. It is large campus, and you never know who you'll encounter. I don't recommend walking alone at night since it is a big campus. Also, the police are eager to bust any parties, so keep it quiet and safe!

Safety

The University of Iowa is generally a safe place to be. Since it's downtown, you have the occasional scary people, but the university has a pretty good alert system to let the students know that something bad is happening.

Facts

Did You Know?

In Iowa City, the UI police perform the same duties as the city’s police officers. The UIPD deals strictly with on-campus issues, while the ICPD covers the entire city; so don’t think the UIPD won’t bust you if you do something illegal.

In Iowa City, a minor in possession (MIP) is referred to as PAULA (Possession of Alcohol Under Legal Age), and driving under the influence (DUI) is referred to as OWI (operating while intoxicated).
