College Prowler Take
Iowa City is a relatively safe town and a generally positive atmosphere for students and townies alike. More often than not, the crime that does occur is small and often results from students being careless or drunk. UI does a great job of making students feel safe—on weekend nights, the UI police are always a visible presence. The University also has set up a number of emergency phones around campus so students can call if they ever have a problem. Student Health Services educates students on the dangers of unsafe sex, poor diet, substance abuse, and stress. This helps keep both personal safety and security up around campus. There have been a few incidents to raise concern around the area, but these should not deter anybody from spending time in Iowa City. In recent years the number of sexual crimes has increased, and both the city and the UI are addressing this problem. Overall, the University and Iowa City do a good job in protecting students and trying to stop any crimes before they occur.

The best thing to do is use common sense. Don't walk alone at night, especially while talking on your cell phone. Iowa has something called Night Ride that operates Thursday through Saturday nights—girls can call them, and they will pick you up downtown and drive you home for free.

There are no major crimes to speak of. The most common are alcohol-related arrests, which they love to hand out. Security consists of Iowa City police and University cops who have taser guns. |

I have found the University of Iowa to be a very safe campus; I have never had any problems. I just make sure I’m aware of my surroundings. There are always tons of officers from the department of public safety driving around. Plus, there are blue emergency phones spread throughout campus, and a free bus system that runs throughout campus. |

I believe security is tight here. I feel very safe with the blue emergency phones and locked bathrooms in the residence halls. |

Iowa is a safe campus. As always, proper precautions should be taken, and you shouldn’t walk alone at night, but there are campus police, blue-light call-boxes, and other safety features. Since I have been at Iowa, I cannot recall many, if any, attacks. |

Did You Know?In Iowa City, the UI police perform the same duties as the city’s police officers. The UIPD deals strictly with on-campus issues, while the ICPD covers the entire city; so don’t think the UIPD won’t bust you if you do something illegal. In Iowa City, a minor in possession (MIP) is referred to as PAULA (Possession of Alcohol Under Legal Age), and driving under the influence (DUI) is referred to as OWI (operating while intoxicated).
