College Prowler Take
When students first arrive at UI in August, they whine about how hot and humid it is outside. Oftentimes in August, you’ll want to run an air conditioner just to keep things comfortable. As soon as the seasons change, though, there are plenty of complaints about the cold. Winter temperatures can get down in single-digit temperatures, with winds up to 20 mph, which are especially bad if you have to cross the river. Also, during the winter, the ground is often blanketed with snow. Spring semester is generally cooler than fall semester, but you’ll still want to dress for warmer temperatures, and if you’re staying for the summer, it can get pretty hot. In Iowa City, the weather hits both ends of the spectrum. From balmy days with temperatures in the 80s to freezing rain and snow, you’ll encounter it all during college. It’s best to come prepared for every type of weather, so you can accommodate all four seasons.

Being from Minnesota, I feel that the weather is slightly mild compared to what I’ve experienced throughout my whole life. We didn’t get as much snow this year as I’m used to, and there was only about a week of subzero temperatures. It also seems to me that there are a lot more cloudy days here, with usually no rain, just clouds. When it does rain, however, it usually lasts a long time and rains pretty hard. Other than that, I feel like the weather is fairly pleasant and enjoyable. |

I think the weather is beautiful, with the exception of the snowy/rainy days. If it is bad out, there are services to move students from one area to another. I think there are more good days than bad days. |

Hope you like overcast. Bring a good winter coat and also shorts and tank tops. The weather varies quite a bit. The only thing you can count on: you will rarely see the sun! |

Summers can be sticky and hot, but most of the school year is cold around here. Coats, mittens, hats, and sweaters fill the closets of most UI students. |
