Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When students first arrive at UI in August, they whine about how hot and humid it is outside. Oftentimes in August, you’ll want to run an air conditioner just to keep things comfortable. As soon as the seasons change, though, there are plenty of complaints about the cold. Winter temperatures can get down in single-digit temperatures, with winds up to 20 mph, which are especially bad if you have to cross the river. Also, during the winter, the ground is often blanketed with snow. Spring semester is generally cooler than fall semester, but you’ll still want to dress for warmer temperatures, and if you’re staying for the summer, it can get pretty hot.

In Iowa City, the weather hits both ends of the spectrum. From balmy days with temperatures in the 80s to freezing rain and snow, you’ll encounter it all during college. It’s best to come prepared for every type of weather, so you can accommodate all four seasons.

Pretty Nice

I'd say the weather has been pretty nice - quite hot in August, but we are in Iowa. Being as I haven't actually experienced winter here yet, I've heard from students that the big, steep hill on campus can be treacherous, but if the Cambuses can't get up the hill in the winter, that's when classes get cancelled. They did have a snow day in the 2010-2011 year, but who knows if that will happen again any time soon?

It is really a beautiful campus in the fall when the sun is shining... but in the rain, there are a LOT of puddles, so I would recommend rain boots. If you have them.

Rain, Rain Go Away!

The University of Iowa campus is a fairly large campus, with respect to the distance of dorms, to where classes take place. If its storming. windy or SUPER COLD (winters in Iowa can be somewhat BITTER cold), prepare yourself because the walk from the dorms to campus could be awful, but buses do run from the dorms to campus, so make sure you get to them on time so your not late for class! Otherwise, make sure you bundle up or grab your umbrella, because even if you are on campus, you will be doing quite a bit of walking! During the fall, spring and summer the campus is absolutely gorgeous, so a lot of people are outside and walkig around then, which makes up for the other crappy times during the year!
