Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When students first arrive at UI in August, they whine about how hot and humid it is outside. Oftentimes in August, you’ll want to run an air conditioner just to keep things comfortable. As soon as the seasons change, though, there are plenty of complaints about the cold. Winter temperatures can get down in single-digit temperatures, with winds up to 20 mph, which are especially bad if you have to cross the river. Also, during the winter, the ground is often blanketed with snow. Spring semester is generally cooler than fall semester, but you’ll still want to dress for warmer temperatures, and if you’re staying for the summer, it can get pretty hot.

In Iowa City, the weather hits both ends of the spectrum. From balmy days with temperatures in the 80s to freezing rain and snow, you’ll encounter it all during college. It’s best to come prepared for every type of weather, so you can accommodate all four seasons.

Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold

Iowa does have a reputation for getting a lot of snow, but that is not always the case. It does get pretty cold for the winter though, and doesn't get warm until the spring. But the first and last few months are very nice.

Seasons Come and Go

We are located in the Midwest so there are going to be bad days and good days as far as the weather is concerned. It gets really cold here and snowy, but that means cute clothes get to come out. In the summer there are occasional bad thunderstorms, but it's nothing a student can't handle.
