Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The professors at KU vary depending on what major they're in. All professors and graduate teaching assistants offer office hours outside of normal class time where students can come for help or to ask questions. General education classes are often given in big lecture halls, so one-on-one attention can be hard to get. Classes get smaller as the subject matter gets tougher, so individual attention becomes much more common. At the end of each semester, students fill out teacher evaluations to anonymously evaluate the professor’s performance throughout the semester. These evaluations are taken seriously by the University, so professors do what they can to make sure students enjoy the class and learn from it.

In the end, the more students put into classes, the more they will get out of it. Professors are there to help, but only if you ask for it. Communication with teachers is key when it comes to classes that are more major-specific. Relationships with professors are especially important when it’s time to look at graduate school, internships, jobs, or scholarships. The professors at KU want to help you achieve everything you want during your time in college, but you have to be willing to put in a little extra effort, too.

Eager for You to Learn

Professors repeat again and again that they have office hours and are always available for questions and assistance. The few times I actually visited office hours the professor was actually pleased to have someone there asking questions and wanting to understand the material. Most professors also have TA's if you feel weird about talking to your actual professor.

You Always Have Help

The Accounting Program at the Business School is a really great environment for all students interested in it. The professors are usually around until you graduate and some of the professors you have as an undergrad turn out to be important stepping stones to the CPA exam. There are so many resources available for internships, career opportunities, practice CPA exams, and tutorial courses. There is a larger workload but that is only because they want you to be prepared for the CPA exam and your future ahead.

M.E.

Mechanical Engineering is a very difficult major, but not impossible. The workload is large, but manageable. The curriculum is relevant and the facilities are state of the art. Mechanical Engineers are in high demand so finding an internship is not too difficult.
