College Prowler Take

For KU students, men’s basketball tickets are about as priceless as the Hope Diamond. With its rich tradition and success, the basketball team is a national powerhouse and closely followed and adored by life-long fans. KU is in the Big 12 Conference, which is one of the premier sports conferences in America, with rivals like Missouri, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Texas. Basketball is also a popular intramural sport, and during the winter months, the Rec Center is buzzing with pick-up games.

Other sports on campus may not receive as much fanfare, but the football program is gaining in popularity. The team has a good coach, who has led the Jayhawks to win consecutive bowl games for the first time in KU history. KU has always been a basketball school, but it's now a football school, as well. Athletic director Lew Perkins is regarded as one of the finest in the U.S., which is a great sign for the future of other athletic teams at KU. Intramural sports are a big part of the University, as well. The highlight of winning an intramural championship is earning the coveted IM championship T-shirt.

Basketball is obviously huge, but football is fun. They started letting us tailgate a few years back, and our coach is doing a lot better than the last. Otherwise, there seems to be a lot going on in terms of IMs.

Varsity sports are huge. The men’s basketball team pretty much rules the school. The games are always sold out and are always on TV, usually ESPN. Intramurals are really big and a lot of fun. People take them real seriously, so that makes it even better.

I, myself, got a full ride to KU to play softball, so to me, all of the sports at KU are huge.

KU pretty much has year-round intramural activities going on. Anything you could possibly imagine, from rock climbing to softball, we have it.

There really is only one varsity sport that counts on the KU campus: men’s basketball. If you’re already not a fan of the game when you get here, be prepared, because you’ll become one. Basketball around here is unbelievably important to people. You will camp out for games, which sounds nuts, but you’ll do it. We also have a football team, but everybody loves basketball. By the way, next year should be a great one for our team. We should do the same next year.

School Spirit

School spirit is huge here. Students are very proud of the school, and you’ll see Jayhawk apparel all over campus. The Jayhawk tradition is strong, and if you run into KU grads at any point in your life, you’ll definitely have an instant bond to build off.

Getting Tickets

Many students buy the All-Sports Combination Package, which includes tickets for football and basketball tickets. But the package doesn’t guarantee you a spot in the crowd—basketball tickets must be picked up at a certain time before they’re sold out, otherwise it’s too late.
