Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students have different opinions about computers and accessibility on campus. While there are many different labs on campus, the most popular areas in the libraries are often occupied to the point where there is not a free computer during the middle of the day. To combat this problem, the University offers laptops that can be checked out in the libraries and other labs around campus. The different labs on campus provide a great variety of programs, from basic things like Word to video editing and Adobe programs.

Campus buildings have access to fast wireless Internet, but the Internet in the dorms can sometimes be unreliable. While bringing a computer to KU isn’t a necessity, most students bring one because of the convenience. Professors post grades online and send frequent e-mails about classes and schedules, so not having a computer nearby could potentially hamper your ability to stay on top of things in classes.

Slow and No Free Printing

The wireless access has just reached the dorms on campus this year. The speed of the computers in the libraries on campus are slow at best. It can take up to ten minutes for a computer to log on. Printing is not wireless and is not free. It can be hard to print on campus because of the lack of computers in the libraries; especially during busy hours, such as lunch.

Availability and Affordability

The University of Kansas is a very large school, but each of the seven libraries has computers open to students, and tons of printing areas. One may simply rent a laptop for a few hours for free, using their i.d. Printing does cost $0.08 per page, but each semester every student gets 100 free pages of printing, and in some areas of study, printing is free (ex. Engineering).

Computer Life

Living in the dorms thru the school them WiFi is hardly available. Living at Naismith then there is WiFi which, is poor for the entire Lawrence area. The television cable channels at Naismith are awful and they take away all of the channels that this age group typically watches. Definite need for a personal laptop. You do get $8 worth of printing through the school from your tuition.
