Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most people aren’t surprised to hear the majority of the student population is white, but this doesn’t mean that KU lacks in diversity. Compared to other colleges in the Midwest and especially other colleges in Kansas, KU is as diverse as it gets. It doesn’t have the typical conservative feel that other Kansas colleges have, and it’s often considered a safe-haven for members of different ethnicities or sexual orientations.

Students from more than 110 countries around the world call KU home at some point during their college career. With so many foreign students, there’s always someone or something new around the corner. KU also boasts one of the highest study abroad rates of any public university in the nation, which shows that KU students are interested in knowing how people live in other parts of the world. Students agree that KU has a unique feel, and it’s often considered an oasis of diversity in the middle of the state of Kansas. The administration is pushing to increase enrollment rates of minorities at the University to make the numbers show it’s as diverse as many students feel it is.

A Very Diverse School

There are plenty of foreign exchange students, and tons of people with different ethnic backgrounds. I made five new friends the first week; four of them weren't from the United States.

Diverse and Welcoming

KU is Incredibly diverse. If you are a bigot or a racist, this is not the school for you. We have students of all races, all economic statuses, and all religions. People here are very welcoming of the LGBTQ community as well.

The Middle

KU has mostly middle class students. This is not a complaint, simply a fact. If you do not fall in that same category it is not obvious to the other students. KU is very supportive for those who need the extra help in the funding department. The Endowment Association particularly helps in that area. You can get loans from the donations alumni have given. They really do a nice job of making sure you can stay in school no matter where you come from.
