Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Safety and security are high priorities for any college campus, and that’s no different for KU. There is a blue-light emergency phone system students can use if they have an emergency on campus, which helps everyone feel safer walking on campus at night. There are security desks in the entrances of every dorm, and guests must be checked in and out by leaving a drivers liscense at the front desk. Students must use a University ID card to get into the dorms at all times, not just at night. The University also offers services like Safe Ride, which offers students a free ride home, whether they are intoxicated or just afraid of walking home in the dark.

Students generally feel that the KU does a good job ensuring safety on campus, but the University can only do so much—students are responsible for keeping themselves out of bad situations and their belongings safe. The biggest security problem at KU is theft, so it’s important for students to keep tabs on their things, like laptops, wherever they are. It’s easy to feel safe in Lawrence, but locking doors to dorm rooms and off-campus housing is very important. If students are careful, theft and other security problems won’t be a concern.

Goof Facilities

The Watson Health Center is good, there are always people on hand to check things out and appointments can easily be set up.

Secure, Welcomed, Informed

I always feel comfortable walking back from class late at night on KU's campus. There are clear lit paths from the campus to the dorms. There are usually police officers walking on campus or patrolling. It is always best to be smart but KU is a relatively safe and secure campus.

Limited Campus Police Presence

I have been disturbed by the limited presence of campus police. I walk to school at 4:30 every morning, and I am always nervous about walking alone through the dark. Walking back home after late recitals or rehearsals is even worse. I have heard veritable horror stories from dorm-dwellers and RAs about the situation of the dorms: drunkenness, drug use, unauthorized cohabitation and noise violations are all tolerated. One of my classmates has been waiting for three months for a simple floor transfer since the people down his hall have set up a regular 2:00 AM appointment to pound on his door and shout obscenities at him because he reported them for a noise violation.
