Huge Multicultural Populace

I was surprised by the number of international students that were here. This is a very good opportunity to know and learn about other people and their cultures and they are very happy to do so.

BM Musicology Program

The program in which I am enrolled is unique; I know of only a couple of universities that offer an undergraduate Music History or Musicology degree, and most of those are very large music schools. I am the only student in the program here. The fact that there are only four faculty and about ten graduate students in the musicology program has given me many opportunities for research and mentorship than I would have had at a larger school. Most people come to musicology through performance or music theory, so I was excited to be able to start doing research and teaching during my undergraduate.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Jayhawk: The Jayhawk is a mythical bird that has gone through many transitions in its years at KU. In 1910, Henry Maloy designed the first bird with big sneakers and a grimace. After 36 years, the Jayhawk was redesigned into what fans see today, the smiling, happy Jayhawk.
  • Rock Chalk Chant: Arguably, the most infamous chant in all of college athletics. Theodore Roosevelt pronounced it as the greatest college chant he had ever heard. The chant was born in the mid 1880s by professor E.H.S. Bailey and some associates. After a trip to Wichita, the group of professors returned to Lawrence only to chant, “Rah, Rah! Jayhawk, KU.” An English professor decided to change the chant and substituted Jayhawk with “Rock Chalk.” The professor felt this made sense because of the transposition of chalk rock, a limestone formation straight out of Mt. Oread. Today, the chant is sung at every athletic event, and it’s especially loud during KU basketball games.
  • The Songs: Two songs have stuck with KU during its long and rich tradition. Professor Barlow invented “Crimson and the Blue” in 1891, and “I’m a Jayhawk” was written in 1912, which talks about the universities that were, at the time, the other Big Eight schools. In 1926, the glee club at KU made “I’m a Jayhawk” a nationally-recognized college song.
  • The University Seal: A very important part of the University, the seal comes from a Biblical story in the third chapter of Exodus. According to Reverand R.W. Oliver, the University’s first chancellor, the symbolism reflected in the seal is the bush that was on fire but not consumed, so Kansas is ever scorched by heat and drought, yet not destroyed.
Urban Legends
  • People allegedly have sex in the library.
  • There’s supposedly a series of steam tunnels running underneath campus that you can sneak into.
  • Wescoe Beach is an actual beach.
